Edit: the even easier option is to just get started for free at WordPress.com, which gives you a free wordpress.com subdomain (so yourblog.wordpress.com). You can also pay £3 per month (billed annually) for a one-year free domain, a custom domain (so for example yourblog.com), no ads (the ads aiui are just a banner at the top saying "made with WordPress").

For about £3 a month (or £30 billed annually) you can get fast, reliable WordPress hosting from Mythic Beasts an independent hosting provider (almost all the shares are still owned by the founders, no external fundraising) with a reliable network with servers in the UK, Netherlands and US (California).

You can get a more or less one-click WordPress install which doesn't really require any technical know-how.

Depending on what you want to host, there are some hosts you can get for free. Google's Blogger platform is still free for some reason. And unless they have changed it - an absolute possibility given that I last used it over a decade ago - they don't insert any ads unless you put them there yourself. They just have a little bar they put at the top.

I'm not sure about using a Google service. From what I've heard, they tend to stop providing some services randomly for seemingly no reason.

That’s fair, but in this particular case it has been going for something like 20 years.

"Own Your Web" is a newsletter oriented around setting up your personal website. Much of it is oriented at designers & developers, but this is a special issue for people without technical skills. Tildes loves the small web; perhaps this will help someone start their own small website.

When someone wants to start their own website, I usually see them go to Wix or SquareSpace. Those do their job well enough, but at the cost of lock-in—if you outgrow those sites, there's no way to move your site elsewhere.

This post offers lots of alternatives for novices wanting to make something cool. I was particularly impressed with Blot—I haven't tried it, but from their website it looks as simple as managing files in a folder. That's pretty cool.

Thank you for sharing this! Blot looks like exactly what I'm looking for.

I purchase domains when I have ideas but then never use them. I have a self hosted Hugo site for my resume/portfolio, but involves a certain amount of maintenance that's fine for my main site, but still a little too much for a simple blog website where I just want to post random thoughts.

Edit: Blot is awesome, thanks again. It took me five minutes to setup and it's so intuitive and easy to use. It solves most of my problems with Hugo, and I can just post blogs whenever, wherever so much easier now.

I just need to figure out how to self host it. Awesome recommendation, I'll be keeping my eye out for more of your newsletters.

This HN thread has some good options for simple static site generators, with the OP offering one built to work easily with GitHub Pages (free). https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39467132

The product OP is offering is not a static site generator, but rather a CMS that works on top of existing SSGs for people who don't want to manually edit a bunch of templates and markdown files...
