On one hand, those who disagreed with me will say this is a prime example of why AI is so dangerous - and they're right.

On the other hand, this is also a prime example of how this genie is already out of the bottle, and how we will need to find a whole new attitude about photo/video/audio "evidence." From now on, everything is fake until proven otherwise.

The best way to "deal with it" would be to (1) take accusations seriously but still (2) presume innocence. Which I understand is a very weird concept that will make the internet treat me like a monster. At least I'm black, which kinda makes it less likely to happen here. I wouldn't dare comment on anything in which I am not directly implicated. Anything less than "burn the witch!" will likely be interpreted as a defense of the right to throw kittens down the river.

The three-month probe, which involved local police and the FBI, concluded that the audio was forged using AI tools by Dazhon Darien, the athletic director at the school, according to Baltimore Chief of Police Robert McCollough.

That sounds like a laborious affair. I can only assume that most cases involving AI won't get FBI's attention. That is concerning.

This was (and is) one of the biggest concerns about AI. In a way, I'm glad the first "major" case is this instead of something on the political level. It's a solid example of the harms people have speculated, at a level that won't potentially harm the entire country.

It's still incredibly disturbing though, and I worry that others may now be inspired to copy it against disliked teachers and other school faculty. While this coach had a motive because of the principal ordering an investigation into him, I recall a few stories of students and even parents trying to run smear campaigns and spread lies about disliked teachers and faculty for petty reasons.

I've heard of lives ruined just from accusations without solid evidence. This is just one more tool to do it. Even if it can be somewhat quickly disproven, the time taken for investigation will disrupt their lives and cause immense stress. And some people will never fully believe that the victim isn't awful in some way.

During the NH primaries, an AI generated voice of “Biden” called people telling them not to vote. If I remember correctly, it was luckily pretty poor quality which made it fairly easy for people to identify as fake. It’s already happening though, and I have to assume we’ll see someone more competent release AI generated political slander this fall.
