My neighbor works on forest fires. He bought starlink and I guess the firefighters love it but it has to be close to base to use. Most of these guys (and SAR) work on HAM radios I assume. But the combo of this and starlink could really impact communications. Sending photos or videos of specific things instead of describing it over radio or sending exact GPS coordinates or even just the opportunity for a lot more lines of communication instead of just a couple of open radio channels.
Starlink really is the future of internet for rural and mobile use cases. It's amazing how well it works and how (relatively) reliable it is. It already has changed the game for a ton of people, and now that its rolling out to more and more locations its becoming the undisputed champ.
I feel like it's pretty wild not to mention that they were able to pull this off using Morse Micro’s existing kit you can order, which is basically their chip, a few antennas, and a Raspberry Pi (and maybe a battery?) for $200.
You can also snag just the chip and a small antenna to use with your own Raspberry Pi or other system for $30. That's what they used to get a 2-mile range right in the middle of San Francisco, beachside and all.
Yes, right now, you can buy that chip. It's insane. I am ordering a few.

I'm very interested in this. Does it not violate any FCC rules? WiFi is a public band so I suppose it doesn't?
Nope. Its 900MHz which is in the unlicensed spectrum.
Haha if I had any useful use case for this I'd be picking one up too.
Not that I need it, but it’s funny to imagine myself at a coffee shop a mile from my house using my own WiFi network.
