    The obvious aside, why are they rolling their own crypto? Seems like a lot of wasted effort. Can't be a backdoor because it's not E2EE anyway and any data can be accessed on the other side, so...

      There’s a general distrust and desire to eschew “western” technology in the Chinese tech scene. It has its pros and cons - on one hand, China is the only major country that is truly hands off from US tech giant, and that form of US soft power. With TikTok, it’s arguably even begun to exceed the US social media giants in algorithmic media. Not an easy feat, regardless of what you think of the ethics.

      On the other, you get a shitty version of TLS.
