Theory crafting: XR glasses + Windows VM via Android
Title kinda gives the gist of it all.
I have been wondering about a way to have a "full" desktop with just XR glasses, a phone, bluetooth keyboard, and an internet connection.
Not sure if this is easily doable, or if Windows VMs would be so expensive to make it pointless. Maybe something like WINE or w/e the not 20 year outdated current thing is to run Windows software.
The main use would be to run 1-2 browsers and trading software.
Just curious if this is a foolish idea or not.
The closest thing for now would likely be the Virtual Desktop app for Quest or Rift headsets. Windows as it is currently isn't really built for XR, and while there have been attempts with Android or specialized tools to make that sort of environment, it's a bit of a cludge when almost everything for productivity is web or mobile based anyway.
I'll preface this by saying that I think this is way overkill for your goals. If you just want to be able to use a browser and run some specialized Windows software, why not just get a small, compact laptop? It'll take up less space in your bag than any combination of other devices needed to accomplish your goals.
With that said, you could go about this two ways: the insanely expensive way or the moderately expensive way.
Either way, you can use an external keyboard and mouse to control things. You also get all sorts of other things you can do, like watching movies on a big screen wherever you want and access to all sorts of other apps.
The Vision Pro is very, very, very, very prohibitively expensive so I don't actually expect you to get one for this. You can do almost all of the same AR things with both headsets. Obviously the Vision Pro also does VR stuff that the XReal glasses can't.
Now that I've said you shouldn't buy a Vision Pro...as someone who has both a Vision Pro and a PiMax Crystal Light but has also used some of the XReal glasses before, I can tell you that the comparison between the Vision Pro and other XR headsets is night and day. The Vision Pro is in a league of its own when it comes to image quality, window stabilization, environment passthrough and user experience. It's the luxury version of what other headsets can offer.
There is of course the fact that when you are wearing the Vision Pro, you'll be that guy. With the XReal glasses, they just look like a pair of chunky glasses unless you really look at them.
