Searching for neighbours on the indie web
Hi and welcome to this post
I was just wondering if anyone else (besides me) is currently interested in the indie web and also in extension 88x31 Buttons.
I have a small (and very much in-progress) website that I mostly coded myself. I started sometimes 2 years ago, so in 2024. And through that time it has gone through so many iterations. My site only consists of HTML and CSS and some minimal JavaScript. So I was just wondering if anyone also has an interest in the indie web and more importantly also has some buttons?
The idea or goal with this post was to just find some more people to add as neighbors because I find it somewhat scary to just ask people out of the blue or email them.
I also made my own if anyone wants to link it to their site please let me know.
This is my button:

<a href="https://luna-uwu.nekoweb.org"><img src="https://luna-uwu.nekoweb.org/button-luna.png" alt="Luna's Button"/></a>
I guess the link to the site is this:
https://luna-uwu.nekoweb.org/ (I think i posted it before)
Some "definitions"
What is the Indie Web?
It is some sort of a movement to bring back personal blogs and personal websites there are a few hosting alternatives similar to geocities in the 2000s. One is called neocities and the one I'm currently using is Nekoweb because indeed the web should be for cats!
What are these 88x31 Buttons?
so these buttons usually link to other's people site and they are the size of 88x31px it's pretty small but since you can do it in the GIF format, you can even animate them, and they usually look pretty great.
There are some examples on my site :) on the bottom :)
I guess that's about it. I hope you have a nice time of day wherever you are.
I'm not at my pc until Monday but I'll be sure to get add your button to my teeny site I just started. And I'll see if I can make my own button and share before too long.
Glad to see others are on the indy web! I think it'd so exciting!!
Do we need a tildes webring?
Omg what a good idea

I don't have a button - maybe I should - but I am a proud member of both the IndieWeb and XXIIVV web rings. Hello!
https://rmv.fyi
I think I saw your site about a year ago. I think it looks still very cool.
But your like design and everything is just not okai. It's too good. The wheel of fortune where you can select a problem is just too good!
Hey there! I’m currently piloting a site that has exactly those things.
When I publish it, it’ll be at plots.club, but until that point, I have a staging version of the site that I pulled some folks in to test. That being said, it’s pretty sleepy, so I should probably just release the site to the masses. If you’re curious, the staging site is at staging.plots.club and I have a soft auth landing to keep bots out for now. u: psu, p: psp. That block won’t exist when I do go live.I went ahead and published the dang thing - it’s live at plots.club.Most importantly, of course, here’s my 88x31 and I’d love if you linked to plots.club - I’ll do the same back to you! (My 88x31s are the end of the docs which are also present on the staging site)
Yayyyyy (cute button)
I'll do it in the morning since it's 4:30 am
edit: it's the next day and the button has been added (thanks so much) very cool project btw
Saw your edit - thank you for putting this out there so folks could find each other, and for the kind words about the site!
I also don’t have a button, but over the years I have tried to Indieweb-ify my (somewhat neglected) blog: https://giraffleur.org/
I like your button and the overall vibe of your site! I am about to dump a bunch of new posts and do a little housekeeping on mine, so maybe I will whip up a button while I’m at it ;)
feel always free to reach out if you created one ^^. I really like ur site and the overall feeling of it with the logo and ur whole philosophy.
Thanks :) I feel myself getting inspired to do a complete makeover haha.
How do you make your site? Do you use some kind of site generator or CMS? Or by hand?
I started like 2 years ago with a template that was on this site: https://foollovers.com/
And then I more and more changed the template / code to fit my needs and also found a lot of other sites where I like a certain thing and then usually I try to recreate things of what I like.
So a lot of copying from other people aswell.
I think the indie web also encourages copying and getting inspired by others.
For example the sidebar is something that I found on github.
The cat I found the original also on github and added myself a dropdown and also more variants of the cat.
Also my whole code is hosted on Github so others can copy stuff and use it for them!
Just out of curiosity I looked up some button makers:
And honestly the list goes on, it seems like a fairly popular project for people to make their own editors. I just didn't know that.
Sorry that this doesn't really get the meat of your post.
I just created mine with procreate i didn't know there were so many creators wow
Nice Triple Baka button. Always fun to see random Vocaloid things in the wild.
tagging your own post as “cringe” :(
Will have to check out your site later once I’m at my computer, but I am a big indie web fan so happy to see it shared here.
I do not have a blog or site yet, though I have been thinking about it for the past 2 years or so…I have some scattered eleventy templates on my computer somewhere.
I believe it was meant as cringe (affectionate) rather than cringe (derogatory)
My Xennial ass needs a translation. Like sick?
I feel it's similar to the word freak.
Most people see it as a negative, but I think it can also be a good word - I want to be a freak (positive, not derogatory)!
Makes sense now that I've had a cup of coffee
I've looked into the indie web so many times over the past half-decade, or so, but I've always been quite intimidated by the existing webrings- everything seems so well established and I'm only a single person with a small-ish presence on the web, and not a particularly interesting one at that.
I'd love to join the community and talk with like-minded people someday. Maybe I should work on my own 88x31 button! I can be found at enblynx.net, and there's plenty of room for buttons anywhere on the page.
Very interested in, glad to participate in, and love browsing the small web.
Though I should probably update it at some point, I do have an 88x31!
Wouldn't mind having some neighbors and finally building out a little 88x31 section
My button is available here https://inward.garden/inward_links and linking it to https://inward.garden is fine.
If anyone else wants to exchange feel free to let me know also. While probably a rare worry, I will note there are a number of things I refuse to link to like anything involving crypto/nfts/generative AI/LLMs/etc, just FYI. You may want to browse my site to get a sense of my vibe before exchanging and that's understandable.
I love the design of your button ^^ very much simple like your website. (not in a negative way - I love the design very old school and stuff).
I would be very much open to being neighbors since
So I would very much be open to exchanging buttons (^_^)
Thanks!! I love the spinning cat gif on your site by the way! :)
Added your button!
I am currently not at home but I will add it as soon as I can!
I already shared as a parent comment, but I'd love to exchange if you're open to it! I've got two button styles available - bordered and unbordered if you'd like to link back to https://plots.club.
Sounds good! Any preference on if I store the image locally or hotlink it from your provided image URL? (I think some may prefer hotlinking so they can dynamically update it if they change their design, though I can see arguments against doing so as well).
I'll add the bordered one to my page shortly
No preference but I appreciate you asking! Got you added on my side as well :)
Wonderful! :) (Also thanks for the shout-out in the Thank You section, appreciate that!)
I don't have a button (perhaps I should), but I have tried making my site have a 90s Netscape color scheme aesthetics. I mostly participate in the blogging sphere of the IndieWeb, especially the monthly IndieWeb Carnival which is always a lot of fun.
I really like your writing style. There are so many blog post's o.O
Also the Indie Web Carnival seems fun I'll definitely have to look more into it.
Hopefully I'm not too late, but I just created a simple 88x31 button png for my website stack of goats! Currently my website has mostly progress updates on projects and TTRPG content that I've been putting up for free. I don't yet have any buttons but I do have a webring and also a wander console. I'll try to get a home for buttons and add folks sites to the wander console as soon as I can!
You are never too late --
I'll add yours in the morningAlso, I'll have to def check out your itch.io more in depth !!!
also I love your logo / button the goats are so adoarable.
Edit: I thought I would quickly add it and I did so yea
