    Screen compulsion is a widespread problem -anyone who says they don’t have it just hasn’t realized it yet.

    I have a really hard time with this kind of writing. It begins with the premise that nobody exists who doesn't suffer from screen compulsion, or if they do, that this article isn't for them. I get what the author is trying to say but this is a really off-putting way to start.

    Overall I think this is an interesting discussion about a long ongoing phenomenon: technology changes the way we interact and it does it really quickly, and really unevenly. I've never seen these gestures myself but I'm sure someday very soon they will be ubiquitous.

    Things seem very fragmented now, where your choice of technology significantly impacts how you interact socially with others (including cases like this, where you're not intending to interact with others, but their unfamiliarity with what you're doing makes it an interaction). And with how quickly technology changes, these paradigms of interaction also change quickly as you cross tech garden walls.

    Memes being the most contemporary example of how technology has changed the way we communicate. Many of today's memes would likely be as nonsensical to someone a century ago as random arm ticks are to sometime who isn't familiar with the smart watch ecosystem.

    I will say that i'm not opposed to gestures and new modes of input overall, when phone calls went from holding up your phone to a airpod in your ear it felt weird, but you'd understand after...

    I will say that i'm not opposed to gestures and new modes of input overall, when phone calls went from holding up your phone to a airpod in your ear it felt weird, but you'd understand after seeing the airpod.

    From what i remember reading on Meta's neural wrist band in the tests long before releasing the users start with big open gestures and slowly over time learn to invoke the same gestures with smaller and smaller movements until they nearly don't move at all but still send the neural signals required for the gesture, i feel as tho this would be a better situation for the schizophrenic look in public problem.

    I do hope they increase in utility in some way in relation to the complexity of apps. A single and double click for yes or no works for very few scenarios, it'd probably need a Tab like gesture to be more useful.

    One of the air gestures i've used is Meta's surface keyboard on the Quest 3, it feels like it's from the future and is a joy to use. When someone from the outside sees it they will be confused but when i see them i found the best way to solve the confusion is to let them try it, something about typing and using a trackpad on a empty table is magical for everyone.

    I don't think gestures will be helping the screen compulsion problem or worsening it, that feels like a more fundamental thing where teaching self discipline is more important than changing the machines being used.

    edit: added link, i really can't seem to find where i read the invisible gestures on the neural wristband, it was long long before the release at its research phase

    I don’t think I’m going to be truly happy with future smart tech until there is a safe, non-invasive bidirectional brain-computer interface that runs 100% on-device locally, that’s pocket-size and doesn’t obstruct any part of my body.

    And I suspect that’s literally not possible under any current understanding of physics, so we’re just going to have to make amends with endlessly encroaching dystopia for the rest our lives.

    Because we can’t just, y’know, change direction. Or heaven forbid, reverse course.
