Reminds me of the many armed robberies over crypto-currencies. But given the centralized nature of domains, stealing a domain at gunpoint is an idiot's crime.

Stealing anything at gunpoint is an idiots crime. It's not something particularly bright people resort to in the first place.

I don't know. I am pretty sure that somewhere in history, a smart person stole something at gunpoint. And got away with it.

          I guess D. B. Cooper would've used a gun

I really don't like those domain squatters either, to be honest. Though going for a gun and forcing someone to do something is also pretty unacceptable.

attempting to steal control of doitforstate.com (which doesn't currently point anywhere)

I was disappointed to find out a domain name I once had was purchased by a corporate domain squatter after I let it expire. They now ask for thousands of euros for something that once cost 20 euros per year.

I chose a different (and much cheaper) domain name afterwards, but I didn't leave with a high opinion after contacting them.

Sadly, some people end up buying them, whether that's because they forgot to renew the domain and couldn't get it back fast enough or because they fucked up during corporate rebranding (ihob could've bought ihob.com for far less if they had made an offer before the renaming announcement, and ihob.restaurant was available until a day after the announcement when a scalper bought it). It only takes 1 buyer to sustain their business model.

I tell him if he wants to let it expire to tell me. That way I can hold onto it. He let's it expire. The .com is being sold at 3k now. Cost me $8 with a coupon.

As much of a serious topic as this is, I can't help but picture a man pointing a gun at a computer monitor screaming, "GIVE ME THIS DOMAIN OR ELSE".

This is why I will never register a domain using a TLD that prohibits domain privacy. This might be rare, but I'd rather not put my home address out for everyone to view (and PO boxes can't hide...

Hopkins pleaded guilty to invading a home in June 2017 and demanding that that the victim (Ethan Deyo) transfer the domain through GoDaddy while pointing a pistol at his head. When Deyo asked for the mailing address and phone number he needed to complete the domain, Hopkins pistol-whipped and tased him several times. Deyo managed to get control of the gun and shoot Hopkins, but only after Hopkins had shot him in the leg.

This is why I will never register a domain using a TLD that prohibits domain privacy. This might be rare, but I'd rather not put my home address out for everyone to view (and PO boxes can't hide you if you can be looked up on a voter registration page, register of deeds website, in person at the county courthouse, or by asking a USPS employee).

Yep. The property records is a big one. People think they are anonymous, but a lot of counties let you search property records for free or a fee in the worst cases. I always thought WhoIs info being publicly available was weird. I was 14 and 15 with WhoIs info out there. Pretty scary. I have domains with my info on it.. But I don't want to pay for privacy. Name Silo offers free privacy, but they don't do .it domains. I have one .it domain and don't like the idea of having GoDaddy just for it. But .it domains can not be registered privately anyway. I am hoping with the GPDR law rolling out, they will offer it since it is the Italy county code and Italy is in Europe.
