I have a paid account that I pay 66 bucks a year for. I mean protonmail just works there's not really any reason to have something else. Yeah they had some issues but it wasn't really that big of a deal. I feel like I get my money's worth for 66 bucks a year.
With that said, I do have a Gmail account that I use for garbage stuff. I've had my Gmail account since 2006 when you had to be invited to get one. It has a period in it so I basically have two email addresses.

I have been using posteo.de for over a year now and they are really good, feature rich, fully support all kinds of encryption you might want and they have carddav/caldav, notes, tls sending guarantee, accept cash payments from envelopes, don't require you to put any personal information etc. Good price as well.
Unless both sides of the email are using the same service, how useful is "secure email" anyway? The email will be plain-text in transit, and if it's one of the services that will email a password...

The email will be plain-text in transit, and if it's one of the services that will email a password protected link to the recipient, it just adds friction.

You are confusing two sorts of secure here, protonmail does end-to-end encryption which does indeed make sending it also secure. That doesn't mean that without end-to-end encryption the mail itself can't be securely send. Mail that is not encrypted can still securely be send with the help of starttls. In fact the EFF announced STARTTLS everywhere recently.
So are you asking for recommendations or is this just an ad for protonmail?
The latter, it seems.

Cock.li. Not encrypted like protonmail or tutanota, but fast, simple, and tor friendly.
And they do have @airmail.cc addresses, which at least are a bit more professional.
