This is one of my favorite videos. I originally had it linked in the Tildes announcement post, but ended up cutting it out when I was editing down my way-too-long initial draft. I think it does a great job as a quick and artistic way of showing off some of the gamification and other tricks that apps are using to constantly vie for people's attention.

About my only complaint is that I think the ending is pretty weak, and the example they use of a more "humane" app doesn't make any sense at all. This is a bit of an issue with the Time Well Spent / Center for Humane Tech folks overall - they're really good at talking about the problems with the tech industry, but not very good at showing off what they'd like to see done better. I feel the same way about their TED talks and some of the other things they've done.

I am not sure if this has been discussed on ~tildes already but are there thread on plans/features to ensure that Tildes is respectful of its users' time and attention?

It's a non-profit with no investors, so there's no motivation to maximize profit/growth/etc. There's no advertising, so there's no need to try to increase page-views/engagement/time-on-site/etc. or do intrusive data-collection. It's funded by donations from users, so that I can focus entirely on building things those users want, and making them work in the best way for the users.

Almost everything bad about the current tech industry is due to sites being dependent on venture capital and/or advertising, and you need to eliminate those influences to be able to build in a manner that prioritizes the actual users.

Some websites do provide proactive tools, like noprocrast on Hacker News, which allow users to take control of how they interact with the website.

It's an advertisement?! Well, then... that puts a whole different spin on it.

I didn't watch the video to the end, and I certainly didn't read the blurb underneath it. I just clicked on 'play' to experience this content directly without any preconceptions (or some such bullshit!) - and then found it didn't interest me enough to watch it all the way through.
