Facebook should have gotten their corporate charter revoked after their first privacy scandal. Lacking that, there should have been a mass exodus after his youthful "dumb fucks" comments came to light. It would have prevented a shitload of trouble.

Out of curiosity, what happens to all of Facebook's IP when they're dechartered? Does the website just disappear? What about all the content people keep on it? Do they get a chance to retrieve it...

Facebook's IP goes to the public domain. Every user should get an archive of their data on a USB stick.

With 2 billion users, that's a lot of USB sticks.

Facebook has obviously engaged in lots of anticompetitive practices to get to where they are today, but I don't think breaking them up would solve any of the problems listed in the article. If anything, by being so massive they corral a lot of this bad behavior into one place where we can observe it and at least see it happening.

Hell, Reddit is the 4th most visited website, and for every problem Facebook has, Reddit has it 10x. Yet they're not even mentioned in the article. Pseudonymity allows a single bad actor to create dozens or even hundreds of accounts to manufacture public opinion. Any company like Cambridge Analytica can download an archive of every Reddit comment ever written in the last 10 years and Reddit doesn't even know who's downloading the data. There's communities with hundreds of thousands of people devoted to spreading hate speech. And Reddit showcases it, exposing their users to extremists they would otherwise never come into contact with.

And that's before you get to the smaller, even more extreme communities. Does anybody even know what's going on in places like Voat or Gab?

Off-topic but holy crap, is this what Digg looks like now? I didn't even realize they were still around. Also, from the FAQ: How the mighty have fallen.

Who are you? We're a New York-based team of about 25 engineers, designers, and editors.

    How the mighty have fallen.

To be totally honest, even after reading the FAQ (which wasn't very helpful), I'm not quite sure what they have actually even transformed in to. Is it still an aggregator?

Well, they do have a page where users can submit stories, but I believe editors have to accept them for the stories to show up on the front page. And users can vote on stories, which affects which stories show up in the "most dugg stories" panel at the bottom of the front page. So it's kinda like a curated version of its old self, with a much prettier front page.

And sometimes they do news analysis (like this one) and other original content, which I generally find to be of quite high quality.

I kid, but there definitely is something to be said for the editorial board curation model of link aggregation. One of the things discussed with Tildes trust system was to essentially attempt to allow the most active/trusted members of groups to achieve a semi-curator-like power via weighted voting and limited "super" votes. Whether that's a good idea or ever even comes to fruition, we shall see, but it's an idea worth exploring, IMO.

Oh, interesting. Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know if it's actually associated with the Digg of old in any tangible way (e.g. some of the same employees), or did someone just buy the trademark after the site died in order to capitalize on the name?

Up until a bit ago, at least, I think there were at least a few of the same engineers; one of them wrote a post-mortem on the digg RSS reader a few months ago, for example, I think.

I'm accessing it via mobile -- what's the big deal? It doesn't look as bad as reddit's mobile site.

Oh. That looks very lobste.rsy. I can see why you'd be a bit surprised by the change.
