It was never the #1 social network, but for a while it started to find it's own little niche. Sadly, that wasn't enough for Google so they pushed it, HARD.

It feels like more and more Google services are shutting down. In the past I was happy to use everything Google released. I loved everything about them. Over the years that's really changed. Reader was a big loss and signalled the changes to come.

If I didn't prefer Android over iOS and love YouTube, I would probably be switching away from Google right now. Unfortunately, the alternatives just don't quite cut it yet. I just wish Google would let me pay them for a service rather than gamble on ads paying the bills and closing things down when they don't.

      • DuckDuckGo's search is great--you can even tick a switch to turn off all ads (which are simply based on your current search, no profiling or anything)
      • ProtonMail offers encrypted mail that isn't scanned for ads, though if you want a bigger inbox you'll need to pay a few bucks/mo. For those few bucks/mo, you can get a custom domain, though.
      • There's so many other google services that I won't even list here, but this is the site that convinced me to start switching over.

Granted, I still use some google services. I have a gMail, and use Google Drive quite frequently. Even then--the less you use Google, the less information about you is being sold.

I have started to use DDG, but Google search is a really hard habit to break. I've been reflexively going to Google for any question that pops in to my head for years and years now... ever since I stopped using Hotbot, it feels like.

I have a custom domain with Gmail as I used GApps when it was free for personal use. How is Protonmail's spam tech? I literally never see a spam email in my Gmail inbox and that's pretty impressive.

I've been using non-Google password managers (KeePass + Dropbox/Drive) for as long as I can remember. I've never trusted my passwords to something out of my control.

I genuinely don't think any of those YouTube alternatives even come close to being a good substitute. YouTube is really in a league of its own at the moment.

        Appreciate the reply.

I don't really get any spam in my ProtonMail mailbox. However I've noticed there were some false flags of things that weren't spam in my spam folder but nothing too major.

Same here. I really tried to use DuckDuckGo for a while; I even set it as my default search engine. But I caved eventually and went back to both Google search and Google Chrome (Firefox and its branch-off's were too slow on my computer and network haha).

Another e-mail alternative though is Tutanota! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to switch over to Tutanota either. I feel like switching to another e-mail account is extremely difficult... at least for me. I always think that it's too much of a hassle to switch the e-mail account that my other accounts are linked to. Also, I live in fear that any small e-mail alternatives might shut down, and then everything will... suck.

My only interaction with google+ was it trying to integrate my youtube account with everything else, which, no, those can stay seperate thanks. Wont miss it.

I'm glad that they're learning from the errors seen in other large companies that hold on to personal data and are working to fix them prior to big scandals coming to light.

I hope you're joking. Google has been sitting on this breach since March 2018.

Technically it wasn't a breach. There were no findings suggesting anyone else found out about this vulnerability before they had patched it.

You can make all of the jokes you like about Google+, but even though it was part of the Google surveillance capitalism machine, we users made it ours for a little while.

We put our hearts and souls into it, even though many of us had our doubts. We made connections and art and memories there. We made meaning there.

And now we must go elsewhere, doing our best to keep the connections we made along the way. So I honestly don't give a damn if there was actually a breach or not.

Google+ is basically a creaky old apartment building owned by a slumlord who was waiting for it to burn down so they could collect the insurance payout -- only they've just been supplied with a perfectly legitimate excuse to bring in a demolition crew.

Hopefully though this data can be stored and used in such a way that it really can't be connected to your real identity and is less of an issue then.

The only person I know who is gonna be (marginally) upset about this is actually my mum, heh. And even she is more active on Facebook these days. I say, good riddance.

I'm upset. I got friends on there that I still talk to today. Google+ was the most welcoming social network I've been on. Yeah, it wasn't the most active, but it connected me with other people with the same hobbies/profession, and it didn't feel like I was talking to a community, it felt like I was really a part of it. I've not gotten to have that experience anywhere else. I'm going to miss it.

I spent a shitload of time on Google+ between 2011 and 2016, but Ghost Town jumped the shark around 2014.
