What "claim"? There is so much meta-messaging around this Chinese official's tweet that you absolutely should NOT take it literally. Not even close. Also, the Chinese are better at denying reality...

Also, the Chinese are better at denying reality than Donald Trump: they're a lot smarter than him, and they've had a lot more practice. So...

      • Chinese telecommunications manufacturers are not required by law to assist the Chinese government to obtain consumer data. That's fake news.

      • Huawei does not have members of the Chinese Communist Party embedded as employees. That's fake news.

      • Huawei is not a threat to U.S. security. That's fake news.

      • They're not even listening to his iPhone in the first place. That's also fake news.

Add all that up, and it's quite logical for a Chinese official to suggest that the President use a Chinese-made phone from Huawei if he wants security from Chinese eavesdropping which isn't happening anyway.

But it's all lies. Stop looking for logic. Not everything you read is literal truth, or even trying to be true.

      EDIT: A typo.

But that's not convincing anyone. Like trying to influence the people around him, that's nice and subtle. But this? "You're losing your trust in us? Why not trust us!" Nobody's falling for that....

I don't understand how so many people don't understand this: the Chinese are not trying to convince you. They're playing games. They're denying your reality. It's the same thing that the Russian and American governments do. It's what Kellyanne Conway was talking about when she referred to a government spokesman's statement as "alternative facts". They're throwing noise out there to block out the signal. They're creating static. They're burying the truth with bullshit. In short, they're trolling.

And, partly, they're speaking to their own audiences. They're preaching to the converted. They might seem like they're talking to you, but they're also signalling to their own supporters. In the Chinese government's case, they might be implying to their own people that Chinese products are good enough for the U.S. President to use, but the President won't use a Chinese phone because he lies about how bad the Chinese people are. When the Australian government writes laws to protect its political process from external interference, the Chinese government says it's racism. It's like when Trump says that CNN produces fake news - he's not talking to you, he's telling his own supporters not to believe what CNN says about him.

Trump's former campaign manager once said: "You guys took everything that Donald Trump said so literally. The American people didn't. They understood it." An American political reporter summed it up thusly: "When he makes claims like this, the press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally." Whether it's the U.S. government, the Russian government, or the Chinese government, the same is true: only outsiders and non-believers take them literally; their own supporters take them seriously but not literally. Stop trying to take the Chinese or Russian or American governments literally. It just isn't appropriate.
