Never thought I would see this happen. Seems like it was an [Undisclosed Funds] for [Undisclosed Terms] sort of deal, with Prime Video getting Chromecast as well.

Yeah, I originally thought the situation would only worsen, even though it was such a silly and counterproductive dispute in the first place. But after Amazon started selling chromecasts again last year I figured they might finally be coming to terms. Though I just checked and we still can't buy chromecasts from Amazon in Canada for some strange reason. :/

I love the little chromecast. It’s the “best” physical product that I’ve seen google create themselves. I use one at home constantly, gave one to my parents for YouTube TV, gave another to an uncle for the same, and when at hotels they are super useful as well.

It’s a very cool product in that you never really think about it after setup.

Unless the hotel WiFi doesn't require signing in‒which is rare; you either need to bring along a WiFi repeater, or to spoof the MAC address on a laptop, then login to WiFi.

Yeah, I guess you are correct about most folks and Chromecast in most hotels. My hotel use with it has only happened in a part of the EU that usually has an Ethernet port in the room, and I do have a travel router. Oh now that I think about it, I usually get a business-style room which probably explains getting the ethernet jack.. I hate hotel WiFi.

Imagine owning a device where the websites you are able to access on it is up to the whims of some mega corps when they feel it would be beneficial for them

They're not websites, so it's not like it's a standard being restricted; it has to be specifically developed for the device... However, Fire TV is modified Android, so their app was always compatible. The only reason you couldn't access these before was because Amazon was being anti-competitive, banning sales of Google devices that competed with theirs (Home, Chromecast), and not supporting their devices despite their existing app being compatible. So Google took YouTube away from them.

It's probably an unpopular opinion 'round here, but I supported Google's decision to do that. Amazon wasn't playing fair, so they took away YouTube. That's on Amazon.

You could always sideload either app on either device‒it's actually pretty simple to do, but they weren't available in each others app store.

Typically the argument is that it hurts the consumers. Which it does, but so is what Amazon was doing. I kind of feel it's justified, but I've seen people disagree (presumably because this directly affects them, which is perfectly understandable).

I'd like to think that's part of what brought them to an agreement. It certainly took long enough.

However, I would hope that here on Tildes most people would be a little more objective in their assessment of the situation, so I don't think you have to worry too much about expressing unpopular opinions. But if any "retaliation" does happen (i.e. personal attacks/insults, etc...) (not to be confused with objective criticism or civil expression of a differing opinion), label the comment with Malice... and include a brief message on why you used the label, so it can be investigated and dealt with appropriately. :)

When the YouTube app was removed the Firefox browser was shortly introduced, which allowed you to watch YouTube in the exact same interface as the app did. It's also very simple and straightforward to sideload any android app onto the device. I've personally been using a third party app called smart YouTube TV which works well on the fire tv.
