Using hangouts in Gmail with a keyboard is so nice, then moving to the phone is seamless. I don't know why Google is abandoning it. And they removed their BEST FEATURE which was SMS via hangouts. It was the all in one killer app of messaging. Being able to text my parents from within gmail was amazing (and have it sync on mobile devices and all that). Why must all good things die?

I still haven't found a good alternative to Hangouts that works across iOS and Android and isn't controlled by Facebook. I wish Google would continue delaying this for non-G-Suite users as well.

Telegram or Signal. Telegram is a little nicer and has more "fun" features, whereas Signal is more secure.

What are you looking for it to do? I don't know that much about Hangouts but would Jitsi work for you?

You just have to evaluate what it is exactly you're warding against. If you don't want Facebook reading your messages, WhatsApp is a good bet. Telegram is also good.

I don't use Hangouts but if it's just a text chat app, there's literally dozens that are functionally identical. It's almost comical how similar Telegram is to Whatsapp. It's the same damn app.
