Glad to see Fairphone are still making devices - I really like what they stand for. I was looking earlier in the year at getting the Fairphone 2, but it was running quite an old version of Android. Fingers crossed with project treble they can manage to keep the updates coming this time around.
Either way, I won't be switching. The most sustainable phone is the one you already have, so I intend to run my Pixel into the ground, and only upgrade when I absolutely must.

It'd be interesting to see someone like LineageOS collaborate with Fairphone to release modern android to their systems. The 4gb RAM is not too shabby either.

I ran my previous phone (iPhone 3GS) till it came apart from a bulging battery (long after it stopped receiving OS updates) and then switched to a used (lying in someone's drawer) iPhone 5, which is also long past getting updates and has been repaired a number of times now (for the local guy-in-a-shed-full-of-parts around the corner it's surprisingly modular, actually). I hope to use it for at least another year.

Having to switch away from iOS to Google is an additional reason I'll probably go for a second-hand iPhone again, instead of a Fairphone, after my current phone dies.

Plus I have a few apps I've gotten used to. And (probably mostly due to familiarity) I find iOS nicer in terms of looks and interaction.

Personally, I don't trust Google at all. Apple certainly has its problems, but their "privacy as a service" attitude puts them a few notches above Google in my book. Their new Sign In with Apple initiative shows that their commitment to user privacy is more than just marketing fluff, as this move is upsetting a lot of app makers that rely on the data they get from users that sign in with Google or Facebook.

In a perfect world I would be happy with a de-Googled Android phone, but I'm not willing to give up the healthy app ecosystem Google and Apple provide, or the long-term software support given by Apple.

EDIT: "Trust" is the wrong word. I'm well aware of what Google is selling me, and that I pay for it with my privacy, and I don't think Google lies about this. I just don't think the price of admission is worth it for what is being offered.

Is there an alternative to this in the US? I'd love to get one, but always sad to see them only available in Europe.
