The thing that continuously worries me about these stories is how you get the sense that companies like Amazon become increasingly ravenous in their search for more data points. Combined with the inherently top-heavy structure of the company and the considerable size they have in the market I do not feel secure that they will actually stop of their own accord if the public at large argues they should. What happens when lines are crossed and our collective bargaining power is gone?

What the article made me realize is that big data is a competitive advantage to big tech companies. They want to increase that competitive advantage, and are not going to stop of their own accord.

They have no actual reason to, unless it impacts their bottom line, that's the curse of uncontrolled capitalism. The incentives for every decision Amazon makes, is oriented toward making money, period. Without something of approximate power/influence to counterbalance them, they will exploit their workers and customers up to the absolute limit of what will be tolerated by society.

This is not too say they are evil, or that Bezos is evil. They are operating under a set of influences and incentives that bend their decisions toward a certain direction.

This is why government regulation is needed, to keep large corporations in check. The truly frightening part is, we live in an era where companies like Amazon have amassed so much money and influence, that even the government can't necessarily curb them in the ways they should.
