The biggest advantage to Gravatar is the fact that an insane amount of sites use it, so that's definitely going to be the biggest hurdle for Libravatar. Every single Wordpress blog, a ton of news sites, Github, Gitlab, Discord, Twitter, Medium, YouTube, etc. etc. etc. all use Gravatar... so hopefully Libravatar can get lots of similar sites on board, otherwise I don't imagine it will be very successful.

But regardless, I certainly applaud the effort, and it's good to see some competition in that space, especially with the self-hosted option and backed by Fedora. Though TBH, it's not like this alternative is desperately needed IMO, since Automattic (who owns Wordpress and Gravatar) is actually a pretty decent/ethical company by all accounts.

So it's weird that Gravatar isn't open source. WordPress is.
