As a former user and proponent of uMatrix, it's sad to see it go. Fine-tuned, but simple, control of remote resources accessed by your web browser is incredibly powerful when it comes to protecting your internet privacy, and I hope someone picks up where gorhill left off. We have uBlock, Privacy Badger, and PiHoles, but uMatrix really fit a great niche for those savvy (and patient) enough to utilize it.

Is there an equivalent? While I often found myself disabling it, it was nice having that level of insight to just how terrible the modern web is.
uMatrix is remarkably stable. I'm not planning on replacing it - the matrix view is too good of a scheme.
The only one I know is NoScript, but it was a little more difficult to use the last time I checked it out (which was ~5 years ago).
