Well their options were basically to
    A) delay the iPhone 6 and release some kind of statement saying why it was delayed. They make no money on the current stock and lose face.
    B) do nothing and when we all figured out, oops we're so sorry we'll do better next time but we have your money. Someone possibly might sue but they have an army of lawyers.

Shitty business practice but hey, it's Apple so who cares? /s

I wouldn't really pin that on Ayn Rand (as much as I can't stand her). Under-regulated industries in a capitalist system were always naturally going to gravitate toward this sort of behavior. As soon as someone decides that it's more profitable to do something a certain way, everyone else will end up following suit after seeing the success of that strategy, otherwise they will fail to remain competitive. It's basically just game theory 101.

Planned obsolescence is such a shady tactic. But hey, if they keep making money, why would they stop?

Louis Rossmann produces a series of YouTube videos about fixing, electronics. One of the biggest offenders he sees in his shop is apple products (phones, tablets, laptops, all of it). He's been championing the right to repair for a couple years now because not only does Apple plan obsolescence into their phones, they're abusing copyright & trademark laws to prevent people from fixing them on the cheap.

Here's a video about the latest tactic apple is using to stop hybrid refurbishments from being used:
Apple & Customs STEAL iPhone LCDs - claim refurbishing is counterfitting

It's getting really ridiculous, and I really wish apple would see some major financial hurt from this practice soon.
