SteamLink isn't like other remote control apps. It doesn't link to the OS of the hosting system. It ONLY links to Steam. Steam then links to the OS, virtual hardware and programs.

It's a fine point of differentiation, but it is valid.

I'm looking forward to see what specific reasons Apple has though.

My guess is that they see Steam as an App Store competitor. Steam sells software, and AFAIK Apple hasn't allowed any alternative software stores on the platform.

Not all of them, and not necessarily with stability. But the same can be said for SteamLink too (at least from my experience with the SteamLink box).

I think Apple is concerned about App Store content standards. This app allows access to any game on steam, which Apple can’t necessarily review. Content Apple doesn’t control, especially potentially NSFW (I know steam doesn’t allow straight up porn but there is gore and stuff) has been an issue in the past, like with a lot of third party reddit apps and NSFW content on reddit. They could also be concerned about the customer experience with games that might not be optimized for playing in this way.

Using that, you can remote control your desktop, laptop or server and launch non-Apple controlled programs including access to NSFW content.

Apple's standards about this kind of thing seem to be a bit strange. For example, they banned all reddit apps from the store until the apps removed any kind of "enable NSFW" toggle entirely. If you want to see NSFW content on reddit through an iOS app, you have to log in to the actual reddit website and toggle it on, because the app itself isn't allowed to support it. But Apple allows full browsers, which can obviously access reddit, and enable that exact same toggle (or, you know, actual porn sites).

That seems like a pretty similar case to this one—kind of a generality concept where if something is "general enough", then its ability to access NSFW content isn't as important.

How new? Maybe exchange it for an Android tablet.

Just long enough I probably can't return it unfortunately... but even if I could, the biggest problem with switching to android for me is that I am kinda of app locked and stuck with Apple due to sunk costs. It's sort of similar to why I can't quite fully make the switch to Linux from Windows. :/

Yeah, its a shame that this kind of stuff happens. Its so absurdly complicated when I dont want to lug my computer around to plug it into a TV. Might just buy a steamlink.

Just be sure to wire it in (no WiFi) and I recommend Steam controllers. I used PS4 controllers for a while but the support isn’t perfect.

While I recommend using hard connections, the steamlink can also use 802.11 wireless.

I got mine pretty soon after it first came out and I love it, but I wouldn't bother unless you can run it over ethernet. Wifi mode is pretty patchy, although probably serviceable in some games. It is a little bit shakey sometimes, in that the whole system feels a little bit like it's still in some sort of beta or pre-release sometimes, but everything works, so... maybe see if you can get a good deal on it?
