    This is not a government that needs more power to track more people... especially those who might be trying to peacefully hold it accountable.

    I've taken to reading substantially between the lines when it comes to reporting on China/Russia/whomever is being painted as the next 'big bad'.

    That same statement could apply to the various surviellance mechanisms built or tapped into by the US government, whose usage of is no less nefarious. But reports of such things are always more alarmist when it's Russia or China.

      Isn't it also a bit dangerous to play the "both sides" argument too quickly, here? Isn't that just normalizing the problem? There's worlds between state control in China vs the US (or anywhere in the EU) and to shrug off that difference seems to do more to endorse the surveillance in China than it does to condemn it in the US.

        You're not wrong, I agree what being discussed is bad. I would just like the other sides to be held to the same standard.
