Fosscord's cross compatibility with discord is a big plus. I do have some reservations with regard to it's perhaps overzealous dedication to imitating discord and it's community being comprised of many people banned from discord. In that respect it's federation may be more of a voat than a tildes, and not one that I am eager to federate a home server with (I do not want to use a proxy).

Revolt looks nice and is a more pure FOSS effort but it would have the same challenges with discord holdouts as I do hosting a murmur server.

Whenever some new platform bills itself as a safe haven for people banned from some other platform, I immediately write it off. They always turn into Voat or Parler. Whatever misgivings I have about Reddit or Discord or Twitter, it's not worth propping up such disgusting people.

I think this is the reason why truly competitive alternatives struggle. They cannot resist the easy early growth that comes with appealing to disenfranchised racists and other unsavory cretins. But this always comes at the cost of sabotaging any hopes for long term growth as the rest of us decide we would rather deal with Reddit/Twitter/whatever's corporate BS than spend time conversing with neo Nazis and redpilling basement dwellers.

Revolt does at least plan on an official bridge, though we'll have to see how well that works when it comes around.

has anyone tried bridging Element and Discord? I like Element (Matrix) a lot but it seems like nobody uses it.

If you're saying bridging single servers/channels with the approval of the server admin, it is possible and mostly TOS compliant. It is a bit clunky, but it is possible. But only until Discord...

But only until Discord still lets bots read messages. There will be a way to ask Discord politely to let your bot continue, but I'm not sure if bridging to other platforms will count as a good reason to Discord.

If you're saying "puppeting" a Discord user via Matrix. I've heard about that being a thing, but regardless of the implementation it is against the Discord TOS and you might or might not get banned if they actually start enforcing it. (I've used several unofficial clients and so-called "self bots" before, and my account is still active, but YMMV)

It exists but in my experience kind of sucks because of the difference between what a channel means in Matrix and what it means in Discord.
