In appreciation of well-versed replies and discussions
So far Tildes for me has been truly refreshing. Instead of the polarizing bashing that happens on other social media platforms, the discussions over here have been more than high quality. Actual discussions on topics is the norm and people are aware that other opinions exist.
Cheers to you all and let's keep it that way.
Have you discovered the label system yet?
Deimos is a more effective moderator because of the malice tag which brings content to his attention. As I learn about the site, I appreciate the design choices.
I am also a fan of the thoughtful content here.
I appreciate the design choices very much too. Going by https://blog.tildes.net/announcing-tildes , I think a large part of it is because Deimos experienced the evolution of online forums, starting from BBSes and took a lot of lessons from them. With the goal of promoting discussion and interaction rather than optimizing metrics.
I just want to use @X08's soapbox to say thank you to everyone. I've learned so much just reading y'alls posts and comments. I do feel very self conscious for asking probably very rudimentary questions and I try to not do that too often, especially out of laziness if I can just search it up myself. But the level /depth of knowledge folks have on here is just so amazing, sometimes I wouldn't even know how to formulate the questions and not sure where I would look this up myself.
Nothing makes me appreciate Tildes more than a quick trip back to the site that shall not be mentioned and realizing what a trash heap of rage baiting, low level, bot infested cesspool comments it has become. Dear god, what a fall from the front page of the internet it used to be.
Back page of the porn mag, is about where it's at now.
There are still some good communities, but the main subs with 1m+ subscribers are all absolute bot infestations with rage baiters and keyboard warriors galore. The troll face should become its standard logo.
Grew up in the early and mid 90s. Have a memory of 5 1/4 floppies, and Windows 93. So, certainly not the very earliest aspects of the internet prior.
That being said, Tidles distinctly doesn't remind me of the early internet in my world.
I know exactly what you're referring to (I think!), with regards to the feeling. I just think back to my early days and think maybe the spaces I found online were never as consistently nuanced and interesting as Tidles today. Maybe the difference is you never had a melting pot in my early days: locations online were about /one/ thing as opposed to this penultimate forum of sorts.
