It'd be like if you follow a YouTube channel from your Twitter account and everything just shows up in your feed. You reply to the post or favorite it and back on YouTube it displays as comments and likes. There's also federated file hosts, Reddit clones, and Instagram clones incoming I believe.

Is it not possible to use it while centralised? It would basically be conforming to a public API right?

As Tildes is unlikely to implement it, if that is a must-have feature for you I would follow Prismo.
