People who are mature enough to step back from their own point of view and at least try to empathize with someone else's opinion.

People that understand that a difference in opinion is not a personal attack.

God, I can't tell you how many times over the last four years alone where this has happened to me. I would try to explain something and the person I replied to would give a "you're just salty" or "you're just a SJW" retort, acting like I had killed their dog right in front of their child. Honestly whenever that happened, it would make me feel like shit. I want to avoid that.

I'm from Brazil, but I know (mostly from Reddit comments) that I could trust some people from Brazil, some SA countries, Europe, and I think Singapore. I would like for ~tildes to have more diverse perspectives that are not from Americans because I believe that would help with discussions and how things may be different in other places.

edit: I just invited another european, and I changed a few words.

Totally agreed. I want to add that I think it's important at this early stage to avoid drowning out women and lgbt individuals. Reddit has this issue, and it's the source of a lot of problems....

I have a friend who showed me reddit 10 or 11 years ago. I think he'd do well here. He's also the only person with which I actually talk about reddit in person.

I've got a couple invite codes, and I've distributed them among members of my free software community. If I get more, I'd look to my local group of friends. Some of them have interest in security and privacy, so they'll probably be interested in a free (as in freedom) platform if there's enough people around to discuss the topics that interest them.

If I'd get even more invites, I'd probably look for people on other platforms that gather like-minded people (such as Mastodon) or people I meet at conferences and feel could be a good contribution to a community like this.

I'm with you. I'd rather read an entertaining comment from a so-called jerk than a bunch of polite comments from people too afraid to disagree with each other lest they receive a dreaded "troll" tag. I like a lot about what they're trying to do with this site and what I've seen so far, especially the non-profit aspect of it, but between humor and other "fluff" posts being disallowed and the troll, noise and joke comment tags, it seems to be headed in a rather humorless direction. Of course it's still early yet, so hopefully this place will lighten up a bit as it progresses.

I'm hoping that the humor on this site will have the same high standards as the discussions. There's plenty of other places for your run-of-the-mill memes. Only reason we don't really have them...

Only reason we don't really have them yet is that the trust system isn't built, and that'll be a core part of ensuring that low-effort images & humor don't take over. In the meantime it's probably just easier to disallow the fluff.
