Meanwhile, I have a question. This site (Financial Times) has an immediate popup blocking the page with an offer to buy unlimited access for a month for $1. Anyone who's been online for more than a day knows how to get around those ads, but I have to wonder - does this actually work? Do people actually go to a site and immediately pay money because they want to read an single article that much? Why bother blocking and trying to charge the customer when they have no idea of the quality or content of a site?

But I have to agree. It's a weird thing isn't it? NewStatesman and the ilk are doing similar things at the moment. The data must say that the effort to do this vs the actual returns must be decent.
