Honestly, good. Open seating was one of my least favorite parts of southwest. Part of the promise is that "you don't have to pay for better seats", but actually, you do, since for ages now if you want to be in A block you have to pay for earlier access - hell, sometimes you end in B anyway even if you pay and set an alarm.

It also makes people extra psychotic when lining up for boarding. Assigned seats are simple in comparison. You have a seat, and you just need to get to it.

Traveling alone, I never personally really care what seat I get. Traveling together, however - the open seating can definitely complicate things. I pretty much always default to Southwest when flying (which isn't that frequently), and I don't think this'll change that for me - as long as it doesn't make tickets more expensive.

However, I hope this change doesn't foreshadow changes to any of their other unique policies like free checked luggage and carry-ons. As soon as I have to pay to bring a suitcase, I'm out.

I prefer open seating because with family boarding I can very often find 3 open rows and sit in the middle row. Then whomever comes after can choose or avoid sitting near a kid

All I can see coming from this is increased prices across the board and less legroom overall due to the "premium seating options." It's not like they make planes magically bigger to give more...

As weird as this will sound, I found Southwest's open seating to be part of its charm haha. Glad they're moving to regular seating though. I used Southwest extensively as a university student as they usually had the cheapest flights to and from home to my college campus. Having to watch the clock like a hawk on check-in day was annoying.
