As an American, I've always had the impression that western technology is way ahead since World War 2. It appears the reasons may include:
There's more freedom in the west and that fosters better ideas
The free market has incentives to work harder
More talented immigrants come to the west for the opportunities
The US wasn't directly damaged by the war
Probably all of them are somewhat true, even if countries like Russia and China may have an advantage in longer term planning. It's also true that the west is now in decline, burdened by greed and corruption. It's no secret that companies like Boeing, who made the 747, are basically crippled by short term goals and mismanagement by leaders who are chasing money at the expense of everything else.
Unfortunately the US government is not properly responding to the decline and is in fact accelerating it through bad policies and open corruption.
