Just going off the title; if we actually cared about the environment than high speed transport would be raised above ground or tunneled under it. This also has the benefit of making the ground level much more useful for people who can now walk freely but it does cost a fortune compared to putting it on the ground.
It's a media heavy, interactive article, so I doubt there are any good alternatives/mirrors. NYT's paywall is a "soft" one though, since it has a free article limit that you probably just...
