Not everything needs a live action remake. I really don’t understand why people have this fascination with live action remakes of animated works. Can anyone point me to an example of one of these that was elevated, improved, or was even…just as good as the animated version?

    I just don’t get it.

I'd rather the opposite, honestly: give me anime adaptations of things instead of live action. I generally see a higher potential for visual effects in animation, and the anime style of storytelling is more literary, in that you hear and see what people are thinking. It's far more emotive.

Yes that is the irony, I agree as well that it goes much better in the other direction. Trying to capture the style of animation in live action is just really awkward at best.

I'd love to see a Tenet anime! I feel like the movie has so much potential to be expanded.

There are a few, those that come to mind are:

I'm currently reading the Silo books after watching the show and I think the show is better written than the book.

Another movie that I thought was better than the book was The Count of Monte Cristo. The ending was way better than in the book.

I think if the One Piece live action does great, it will introduce the series to a lot more people which is pretty awesome. I've seen the anime and read most of the manga and it's always nice to re-experience it. I've been rewatching the anime and I did notice parts that could be improved.

There was a post the other day on the subreddit where someone compared the One Piece live action to Wednesday to evaluate it's potential: Comparing OPLA to Another Wild Hit Netflix Series, Examining Some of its' Methods for Success, and Evaluating The Potential Outcome From There.

Those are good examples but not really of what I asked for. Is there a live action remake for an animated television show or film that holds up as equal or better than the animated version? I doubt it. I’ve been hugely unimpressed with the Disney films, every single one has just been a worst version.

Adaptations of manga, books, or video games are a bit different and even still don’t have the best track record.

I forgot Alita does have an anime film…and it’s kinda meh if I remember so one win for Alita’s live action film which I was sad to learn won’t ever get a sequel.

Was Detective Pikachu really an adaptation of anything specific? I figured it was just a movie set in the Pokémon universe and didn’t draw from anything specifically plot wise.

I don't think it really matters tbh. There's a bunch of movies that I liked for example the Warcraft movie was good. I liked Death Note with Willem Dafoe. Sure they changed a bunch of stuff from the source material but I watched it with my dad and we thought it was enjoyable.

A lot of the live action stuff I can watch with my dad since he doesn't like to watch anime (Though oddly the 3D stuff is fine.). The few that he liked were Attack on Titans (He dropped it in season 2 since he didn't like how slow it got with everything getting explained.), That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (I think this show is so wholesome that he just kept watching.) I tried to get him into One Punch Man but it didn't work. He liked 86 and still talks about it sometimes. I got him to watch JoJo Stone Ocean but I had to strap him to the couch pretty much.

It's cool that we're getting some actually good adaptations from different mediums like Arcane was 10/10 and they're planning on doing live action in the Runeterra universe. Arcane is a good sign since Riot Games stated they got approached for years by various studios that only wanted to make a movie for the money and didn't care about the existing fan base so they took it into their own hands. That's bound to have moved the industry in some ways.

One Piece succeeding would be huge and so far from what I've seen, the people working on it seem to care about doing a good job. The original creators including Oda seem to have high confidence it was done right.

Usually in the art world, the good stuff gets seen by everyone in the industry. People become better and better. It used to be that there were no good game adaptations and now there's some 10/10 stuff. Same will happen with anime.

While we're at it, here are some other promo videos they released:

There are also interviews in various places, here are some of them:

    • This is the first time I see the cast (I'm not interested in things Netflix makes), but they seem pretty spot on. Luffy in particular seems like a simple good guy, which is refreshing.

I think everyone is gonna watch it since it’s on Netflix and you ain’t paying - I just hope to be surprised.
