Ahead of production kicking off on the show’s third season, Stewart and Apple have reportedly parted ways over “creative differences,” and The Problem is coming to an end.
The short of it seems to be that Apple insisted on being aligned with the overall viewpoint of the show. Since Apple needs China as an ally and is pursuing AI, it doesn’t want to be producing a show that counters their efforts in that regard.
Overall I’m disappointed. I really enjoyed his show, and hope he winds up on a platform with sufficient journalistic independence soon. Big fan of the format too, it’s a nice contrast to shows like Last Week Tonight which consist mostly of the presenter talking. The group interviews allowed people affected by the issues discussed to actually have a voice in the show.
I’d recommend the show if you haven’t seen it before. The topics are generally more broad-reaching than a regular weekly show would have, so most of the issues discussed (if not all of them) are still issues today. Maybe find it somewhere off of ATV+ though ;)
Several of the interviews with politicians are also available for free on youtube, those are absolutely worth checking out.
Knowing Jon Stewart, he wanted to say the truth, inflammatory as it might have been, but Apple needs that sweet, sweet Chinese money. I'm surprised that John Oliver hasn't met the same fate over...

I think John Oliver is the only real pull HBO has to their platform these days and they know it. He can get away with saying pretty much whatever he wants.

That is a bit of an exaggeration. During the pandemic, The Sopranos was a hit. There were news articles about that. I'm still watching Succession. There is always something good and interesting to...

There is always something good and interesting to watch on HBO, old or new.
Ironically, the one thing I never watch on HBO is John Oliver. The best bits are always on YouTube.

If he's actually consistent with the reasons he was attacking the Bush administration all those years ago, that as bad as Russia's invasion is, the US is involved for similarly bad reasons and not for the benefit of either Ukraine or the American people. It's a textbook proxy war, and we're in it as an excuse to indirectly wage war on Russia and, even more importantly, as a giveaway to the arms dealers.
John Stewart has always seemed to be the person who should be President of the USA, but doesn't want to be. Which is who you would want to be there. He doesn't take shit, and stands up for what he...

Would love to grab a drink with him and just talk about nothing and see what comes up.

I was surprised when Apple first signed Stewart and was further surprised when he stayed on as much as he did. Aside from the obvious business relations the company has with authoritarian countries Stewart would eventually criticize, Apple has always been a rather anodyne and non-confrontational company. I remember there being numerous reports about Tim Cook interfering with series in production and canceling them outright simply because it was a bit too R-rated for Apple's taste. I thought the Stewart sign was a signal to the industry that they can take some heat from their Apple TV division, but I guess they have a limit.
I hope he finds in him to do something, somewhere. I don't always agree with him but I appreciate his opinions.
The NYT article this and all the others are based off of also says Apple had concerns with "further creative disagreements" as the 2024 Presidential campaigns heat up.

What do you think he would say about Ukraine?
