From wiki: The series explores "how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show, Flipanthropy."

Yup, that sounds like a Nathan Fielder project.

I like Fielder, Stone, and Safdie so I'm watching it and will continue to watch it and yet, I feel like the show's missing something. I can't quite put my finger on what it's about. Is it about a toxic marriage, family, self, money, greed, art, racism, class, gentrification, depression, what? I have nothing against ambiguous shows or shows that are multifaceted, if anything I prefer them, but as a viewer I interpret all the signals the show's sending me as noise. Nothing that signals stick with me. I love the formal aspects of it, the cinematography in the second episode was particularly good but I can't say the same about the story so far. It feels messy and underdeveloped. I don't have to know where the story is going or what to expect, but purposelessness is something else entirely.

Interested to hear what you think about it too; reactions seem to be really mixed online.

Not who you asked, but the show failed to pull me in. I only saw the first episode. I get the sense the show is about us watching bad things slowly happen to these unlikeable people. Personally that’s not an interesting premise, not for a series. I’d watch an art piece 2 hour movie about that, but not a show.

I just could not find a way to give a shit about the characters, so why do I want to see what happens to them?

Ha! That makes me feel validated and borderline clairvoyant. And they say you can’t judge a book by its cover.

We finished recently and felt the same way. The show went nowhere and it was a waste of time. The good thing is that we decided to try Nathan for You and liked a lot.

I did! I can't say I enjoyed the journey, nor the destination. The series was going for a Lynchian vibe and in the last episode this was made abundantly clear but the thing that makes Lynch special is the humanity he's able to bring about in whatever story he's telling. The Curse lacked that humanity and opted for shock value instead. It was the kind of show tailored for a reddit audience where they think solving what little details they see on a scene makes a show meaningful.

I still admire all those involved and if you don't have anything lined up, I'd suggest you watch it because it does have a memorable final episode, but when it ends, I was like, "that was cool" and moved on.

Fourth episode goes up this Friday. Any thoughts so far? It's definitely delivering as far as weird and awkward moments, but the story is super engrossing so far too. Anyone else watching it?

My wife and I are watching it. Well, she's watching it while I do my best to hide from the 2nd-hand embarrassment. It's been physically uncomfortable for me to stay in the room sometimes, it just trips every single social awkwardness sensor my brain has.

I've really enjoyed Nathan's other shows, particularly Nathan for You and The Rehearsal, but I think The Curse just takes it all a step too far for me.

Side note: the video he made with the pig and the goat accidentally going viral and ending up on news outlets is my favorite thing in the show so far.

Yeah, I think you might be in the same boat as me. Nathan For You at least has this level of artifice that the show we the viewer are watching is the show that Nathan the character wants to present. He's always the presenter, and everyone you see knows they're on camera.

The Curse takes it outside those bounds and shows us the characters as they are "on camera" filming the tv show they want made, then there are some moments that are sort of backstage behind the camera moments where they talk about how they want to make the show, and then there are the genuinely private moments in which the characters are entirely unaware of the camera we're seeing them through. Those moments are the worst for me, because they really go for these authentic moments from characters that are such completely inauthentic (and unlikeable) people.

I think those moments in general end up being my favorite ones. Much like Nathan For You, where online critics had often cited the staged nature of some sketches (which is obvious, it's television), The Rehearsal follows a similar logic by embracing the staged nature of situations made for television.

The Curse takes it one step further by imagining the production of the "staged" and "real", and the aspirational personalities who plan such events for their own personal gain.

And yup, I can concur with others in this thread; it's awkward, you're either really into it or you shrink into your seat while watching it happen.

My girlfriend and I are enjoying it. My biggest takeaway so far is Nathan Fielder's acting. I think he's been great through the first three episodes, especially in the final scene of last week's episode. Emma Stone and Benny Safdie are great as usual. I'm not entirely sure where the story is going, but it's very watchable and I trust this group to take it in an interesting direction.

If you haven't seen the show but are interested, I wouldn't go in expecting a comedy. Its more of a drama with comedic moments, a la Louie on FX.

Checking in on this, did anyone watch the gripping finale? I thought it was incredible.

I thought the cringe factor when they gave their gift to the girl’s dad was one of the highest of the series.

Also how he let out an exasperated, “…this fucking house” during his struggling was perhaps a way to further emphasize the many fronts he puts on. I’d love to think that his character actually really fucking hates her “art” as well as her deep down. It was only during a catastrophe he shows his real face.

Or I’m reading way too much into it. :)
