Been watching the latest True Detective, Night Country. I'm enjoying it as much as I did the first one. Contrary to popular opinion, I quite liked the second season; it was less "entertaining" but more thought provoking.

But this one is, new. It's oppressive like the first one, but the leads are more sympathetic, and it seems to care more about the people cost, whereas s01 was just about the hunt.

It also really does a wonderful job of exploring how the dark winter environment impacts individuals and society; I feel really disoriented watching, the experience of the actors living daytime lives while it's dark out really projects.

    Currently watching Echo.

    Spoilers below.

This show is lacklustre in almost every way. Two bright points however are the Native American stuff which is very interesting as I as a European know very little about that culture/history, so the episode where they show a Choctaw city in 1200 AD was super cool. The other great thing is the deafness aspect which is very well done and I imagine those in that community are very happy that a show like this with such a big budget even gets made. It's got nothing on Sound of Metal though (the two are not really comparable otherwise, it's just one of the only other things I've seen that deals with deafness front and center) but that's because Riz Ahmed really just shines in that movie and I find the actors in this show to be just.. bad. Might also be a directing issue because there was a scene between two supporting characters in the skating hall which was super awkward - those two actors being pretty good in other scenes.

Rewatched Hawkeye very recently to get ready for Echo. I watched it in one sitting which should say something about how much I like that show! Enjoyed it a lot when it came out and it was just as good on a rewatch. I feel like Jeremy Renner always gives his roles 110% and Hailee Steinfeld is so sincere in her role as well. Really loved that character and looking forward to seeing what Marvel are gonna do with her role in the future! Not that I'm holding my breath considering they tend to do very little with other superhero women. And, to be fair, also the men. And aliens. And nearly all of the rest of the MCU currently lol

I still have one episode to go but Echo is sadly nowhere near as good as Hawkeye, which is such a shame. I would much rather have had a season 2 of Hawkeye instead of this messy spin-off of a spin-off.

Edit: watched the final episode and oh dear, that was a bona fide turd.

Mr & Mrs Smith is great. I'm pacing it. I'm also pacing Scavenger's Reign, which has some really neat world building. Curb is back and is good. I kind of hope he never stops, but puts out a few...

Curb is back and is good. I kind of hope he never stops, but puts out a few episodes whenever.

Tokyo Vice S02 is out Thursday and Resident Alien starts next Wednesday. Pretty good time of year for TV.
