And this is why I wait until a series finishes these days before I start watching.
For me it depends on how well seasons can stand alone. Some series do have an underlying story line but the conclusion of that story isn't that essential to be able to enjoy individual episodes or seasons.
Isn't that exactly why new shows get cancelled?
Given the recent track record of the likes of Warner Brothers/Discovery canceling things for writeoff purposes, Netflix's historic reputation for just bad decision making leading to early cancellation, and the general min-maxing that corporate controlled streaming platforms are engaging in I'd actually wager that it's a not the deciding factor any longer. Once upon a time it was but it seems with the hyper-consolidation and the accountants running things the reasons now are more than just viewer numbers. Hell these days they don't even care to show things they make before they shitcan them.
In this instance though? It's just not a good show...lol.
This has always, always, always been a thing.
Shows get picked up, don't do well, and get cancelled after not finding their audience. Sometimes, the audience just doesn't show up until it's too late, even for good shows like Star Trek or Arrested Development.
There's no solution either. No studio is going to commit to 6 seasons + a movie when picking up a new show. That would be ludicrous.
I don't know what people expect here. Of course shows you might like will get cancelled if you don't bother watching them when they're new.
This just reminds me of the old reddit threads when Toys r Us when under. Dozens of stories about how upset they were they can't take their kids there anymore to play around, try the toys and just have fun...but of course they'd never buy anything or at best they'd check stuff out then just buy it off Amazon.
That's not a very charitable interpretation of my argument but, fair point.
If everyone follows this advice then all TV shows will be cancelled next week and TV will stop being made entirely.
I watched season one as it was released back when I had Peacock. It just wasn't...good. it lacked the heart of the original while also trying to lean in way too hard on it and expand on so much. It did an ok job of answering a question or 2 that may have popped up by fans, like how people who were leapt into dealt with the experience afterwards. But it too some of the fun out of the show by trying to serialize the season and having a multi-sided story told.
I never cared to even attempt the 2nd season
Yeah the new show tried to do too much, and as a result accomplished less. It tried to have an A/B story setup with Ben (the leaper) and the people who worked at the program which often meant there was never just a satisfying story told. Honestly I think it could have worked if the seasons were longer and they had the leaps go over more than one episode (maybe too or three). That way they could actually get in a satisfying bit of "a mile in somebody else's shoes" that the original had and we could actually grow to find the ensemble cast in the current time and what was happening with them interesting.
It might have worked well if it was it's own standalone series instead of being masked with the QL title.
