This is seriously huge for indie animation! By going on Netflix there will be even more eyes on it, while also leaving the creators with full creative control over it. Indie animated shows can go fully mainstream by being on official streaming services and platforms, which means a lot more opportunities and demand for merchandise and allowing the creators make a profit. Meaning more funds to hire staff and produce more content, making indie animation more viable as an actual career path.
This seriously changes the field for indie animation!
What's on Netflix has more details.
To be honest the Amazing Digital Circus is the first good original production that the Lerdwichagul brothers have put out, especially since Murder Drones, Sunset Paradise and Meta Runner turned out to be dogshit.
SMG4 used to be good back when they were just making comedic meme-filled Mario themed machinima videos with Nintendo 64 game assets. What I think killed it was either YouTube forcing them to sanitize their content to make it more 'advertiser friendly', the convoluted story arcs they keep doing, the cast of shitty original characters they keep introducing to the series (i.e. Meggy and Tari), or the fact that earlier original characters (i.e. SMG4 and SMG3) have gone through redesigns and now look like Cocomelon-ified horrors.
What I don't understand is why Netflix paid Glitch for non-exclusive broadcasting rights. The Amazing Digital Circus is already free to watch on YouTube and it's not like they're struggling to get eyeballs on their products, after all their pilot episode has nearly 350 million views.
We have no idea how much Netflix is paying them, if at all. For Netflix, it adds to their catalog. Remember, Netflix wants to make it so that if you’re ever bored, scrolling their homepage will get you something that’ll hook you.
Ditto for glitch - there’s a lot of viewers that will casually browse Netflix that will won’t see a video on YouTube.
I assure you there are plenty of people who have never heard of the Amazing Digital Circus.
