David S. Goyer?! Fucking hell, that guy is the worst producer. Ugh. Here's hoping it's another Sandman and it gets cancelled so he doesn't end up ruining yet another classic work.

What are you talking about? This is the guy who made Ghost Rider, with Nicolas Cage!

Goyer and Friedman serve as executive producers and showrunners. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross also executive produce, along with Asimov’s daughter, Robyn Asimov.

I'm guessing that Skydance is including Robyn just for the sake of having an "Asimov" name in the credits. I also know that Isaac was very diligent about maintaining and renewing the copyright on all his works, so I assume Robyn is there to make sure she and her brother David (the one they don't like to talk about) get their fair share. (Just checked Wikipedia: both of Isaac's kids are in their 60s now!)

Its road to the screen has been very long.

Yes. Well, there's a reason for that: the Foundation stories are absolutely not suited to being filmed. Too much talk, no action, no consistent characters. It would make for bad television and worse movies. It would have to be done as a succession of mini-seasons, with each season focussing on one story. There's very little continuity beyond the growth of the Foundation itself.

The Foundation books have a lot of 'wasn't that an exciting escape from space pirates? Yes it was. Now, let's talk about economics.' For TV, we need the space pirates.

And I'm like, no, no you don't need the space pirates, you need to find a way to make what actually happened in the books interesting, or don't do it at all. But money, so we get the I, Robot movie and such.

There's a scene in one of the early Foundation stories where the main characters are at some big fancy formal dinner with one of their neighbours among the Four Kingdoms. Some general or admiral or whatever starts telling the tale of a recent space battle he was in - and Asimov has his characters mention their boredom with the tale, and then he switches the narrative focus to something else. That was his meta-message about the shoot-'em-up action-packed science fiction stories of that era: "Ho-hum. Can we talk about something more interesting?"

It'll be very disappointing to see the producers of this series insert all the action that Asimov not only deliberately omitted, but even mocked (albeit subtly).

As for the 'I, Robot' fiasco... that was originally not even based on any Asimov writings. It was an independent script called 'Hardwired' which got rebadged partway through the development process, when the studio suddenly acquired the movie rights to 'I, Robot'.

I liked some of those things. I still have no idea how a compelling TV series will be made out of Foundation, though.

Goyer’s credits include co-writing the upcoming Terminator reboot as well as the The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Ghost Rider and the Blade franchises and Syfy’s Krypton series, while Friedman’s include Avatar 2, the War of the Worlds remake and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
