Is "The Morning Show" bad?
Apple has spent a lot of money on The Morning Show for its new tv service. It has a bunch of actors that I love. In particular I'm excited to see Anniston, Duplas, Carell, and Crudup in this.
Metacritic gives it only 60. https://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-morning-show Sometimes a single terrible review can drag that number down, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. There are a few bad reviews, and lots of mixed reviews.
I don't know much about critique or how reviewing works, so I'm curious: is The Morning Show bad, or are critics terrible at reviewing, or is something else going on?
Sometimes mixed is mixed, sometimes different people like different things, and sometimes TV critics mark down things that do something well if they have seen it done a million times.
Apple is offering a week free trial, if you want to wait for a bit, then try it when more episodes are out.
NPR's tv critic David Bianculli didn't like it. I have found some gems by listening to his reviews. He goes on to discuss the whole Apple TV line up, concluding it is not worth paying $5/month for.
okay, I watched all three episodes, @DanBC. I can see why some critics might not like this, but I think it's pretty good. It definitely has a Newsroom vibe, and could have easily been popped into the same universe.
I have a feeling that someone at some point saw the series and figured that the audience needed the first three episodes for structure. After these three episodes we basically know everything we need to know for the remaining seven.
I still don't like Aniston, but her performance improves dramatically after the first episode. Billy Crudup is great.
When I first saw this being promoted, I thought it was going to be a comedy, but last night on Graham Norton, Aniston and Witherspoon said it was basically a drama with a few light moments.
There's no way to say this --- Aniston is not a good actress... or at least not good for this role. This has a slight Newsroom feel, but doesn't feel as polished. I will say, that she's great when she's not speaking. Her reactions, glares, etc are excellent -- but the second she speaks, it just doesn't feel natural. So far it seems like its shot really well and I like Witherspoon's character.
I haven't seen the second or third episode, but there is potential here. I wouldn't rush to sign up for the service to watch it, though.
edit: crossed out an overly harsh line about Aniston. :)
last edit: this series is good. It does have a hint of Sorkin influence. I wouldn't subscribe to a service specifically for it, but if its just sitting there, I think it'll be worth a watch. I don't think the casting is perfect, but it is working by the end of E02.
