The Good Place S04E07 - "Help is Other People" discussion thread
I can't believe we're already at the penultimate episode!
Because we're not, we are halfway done and the experiment is over. The rest of the season could pretty much go anywhere. Classic Good Place
I have literally no idea what happens next, and outside of a quip that the universe literally shuts down to prevent Brent from apologizing, I have to sort out a couple of thoughts about this episode.
We see the newmans split up as opposed to team Cockroach being pulled together, Chidi and Simone do have the most boring breakup ever, despite it being over a guy falling into a sinkhole, due to having their fundamental principle mismatch. I guess they could try and make it work, but if they are setting up Eleanor with Chidi, that had to come up why Simone wouldn't be a good fit for him.
Simone may not have been in the right here, but assuming Brent was unable to die in the afterlife, or was compromised, or any other number of rationalizations she could come up with, it's easy to see what decisions she would have made, and why she would hold it against Chidi for not cutting and running because of some guys saying so.
Anyway, I appreciate the mix-up and look forward to whatever happens next.
I am once again really happy that Jason made some insightful comments. I wasn't sure how they'd turn Brent around (if they were going to do that) but they did a great job with it. I really really can't wait to see what happens next. Also, Michael's thing being "magic" this episode was great.
Agreed that Michael doing all of the magic is great (especially because knowing some basic magic, I could see where he was "flashing" i.e. giving away the trick; it was a single moment and couldn't see how he was doing everything else).
As for the fact that this is actually the half way point, I'm really liking where this season is going at this point. I read an article a long time ago (maybe when season 2 was airing, I forget) that compared the show to how a sitcom is created and the process and life it goes through before it dies. In this model then, Season 4 is the return to the original format. Especially since they're bringing back old tricks like the whole disaster scenario with Brent or "revealing" Jason's identity to Chidi or, heck, even what happened this episode with the whole Bad Place "reveal." It's a great build on top of the original first season because of the raised stakes as well as the new cast members livening up the relationships.
All of this is to say that the writers are doing a hecking good job and I am both glad to get a final ending to the show but also sad to see it go.
