TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
I just finished Star Trek Picard.
No spoilers, just my general opinion
I am very disappointed.
I am a lifelong Trekkie, grew up on TNG/VOY/DS9 and was really excited when CBS announced a return to TV for Trek a few years ago. I was very disappointed in Discovery when it came out, didn't even bother with its season 2 (that's a whole different discussion though). Then Picard was announced and I was excited for the possibility of a true return to Star Trek television. Buts it's really more of the same disappointment.
While the general premise is fine and obviously the casting is great.... its plagued with bad writing and terrible pacing. It felt like watching a two part TNG episode (or movie) that just got stretched out over 10 episodes. A lot of nothing happened, the entire thing was build up for plot points that just never went anywhere.
While I personally would love to see Star Trek return to its roots with episodic storytelling, I know that that's not what CBS wants for the show. Serialization is the current norm in TV, but it just feels really bad in the way they are doing it. Even with the plot and overall story arcs that they did, while I do have some other issues personally with them, the biggest thing is that they were just not done well.
Never mind the fact that this just doesn't feel like Star Trek, it just feels like they took some generic Sci Fi and added Star Trek to it at the last second.
I wanted so much to like STP and the only thing I can say is that I am soul crushingly disappointed.
Also, I wait with baited breath for RLM's re:View of the season finale.
EDIT: @Algernon_Asimov I am curious what you think? I assume you have seen it.
No, I haven't. I'm not willing to sign up to Amazon Prime just to watch one show. And, from what little I've read about it, it seems I made the right decision. I was planning to buy the first season as soon as it came out on Blu-Ray; I might wait a while, until it's marked down on special.
Neither am I, I um... used less conventional means to watch it. I wish it was on Prime here in the US because I am a Prime user (for shipping and grocery reasons, not so much TV). I am not willing to pay for CBS All Access.
I would agree that picking it up on mark down would be a good choice. Let me know when you do end up watching it, I am genuinely curious what you think.
EDIT: Oh, just out of curiosity; have you taken a step back from reddit? I noticed you're no longer a mod on a couple subs I was used to seeing you on.
That's not my style. I have neither the technical nous nor the personal inclination to be "unconventional" in my online viewing.
That could be a long wait! It usually takes a few months for the Blu-Rays to be released after a show has been broadcast (whether via television or via streaming), and it'll take another few months after that for the price to be marked down.
I was becoming disillusioned with Reddit, and had started de-modding myself from a few subreddits, even before I found Tildes. Then Tildes turned up, and I removed myself from the last major subreddit I was holding on to (Daystrom).
I had an alternate account which I used to create a small-ish pet project subreddit. Ironically, I now use that alt account on Reddit more than my main "Algernon" account. "Algernon" now lives on Tildes, rather than Reddit.
I have a small home Plex server, so I acquire and stream most media that I do not get via Netflix or Prime on that (if you don't know what Plex is, think DIY netflix).
The basis of the plot is Natural vs Synthetic life, given your love of Asimov (and Trek of course) I feel like your view on it would be really interesting. I am sure it will come up again at some point in the future.
Yea I have taken a step back in the last year or so from the internet in general and i am not sure how much time I am gonna spend on reddit anymore but you will be missed on Daystrom!
Like I said, I don't have the personal inclination for acquiring content for free.
We'll see.
I've been gone for over a year. I'm sure they've moved on by now. :P
Really? Just goes to show how little I have been online in the last year or so. My bad.
Or... how little you noticed my absence. ;)
for you, @Algernon_Asimov, and others -- I think you can extend the CBS trial from 7 days to 60 days with the promo codes

when you check out. That only works for Americans. For the rest of us, 'Star Trek: Picard' is on Amazon Prime.
It started out great, but fizzled. Aesthetically it was pretty nice -- but it just didn't do it for me.
The main issue, much like Discovery, is the pacing. They spend so much time chit-chatting, then they rush through the meaningful plot points. It's a shame.
It turns out that The English Game has good reason to look and feel like Downton Abbey, it’s made by the same guy.
I love soccer, but this show is really bad. A lazy melodrama that fails to draw any emotional reaction from me. The acting of the posh wife is a parody of the genre, exaggerated and comical even for melodrama.
This show is a soap opera with a better budget, and a bad one at that.
The few soccer scenes are badly shot and don’t allow any understanding of the game. The first episode had some drone shots and touched on the tactical and strategical evolution of the sport but that was dropped entirely.
The characters talk a lot about soccer - sometimes a lot more than they should (I understand the topic would be on the mind of professional players, but gentlemen amateurs would have plenty of more important things to deal with on a daily basis), but when it comes to the matches the creators forget the sport and focus only on personal drama.
It’s hard to watch.
