Have you watched Peaky Blinders yet?

So I’ve been hearing about this show for years and seen clips and always thought it looked shit well I was very wrong, I started watching it last month and I can’t believe how unique and different it is, I’m hooked and wondering what others think I know I’m very late to the party but if you haven’t seen it yet definitely give the first episode a watch.

Damn, is it really that good? My girlfriend wanted us to put it on our watchlist for ages, I assumed because she has a thing for Cillian Murphy. I'm just so burned out from "gangster dramas"....

I'm just so burned out from "gangster dramas". Tough dudes and how tragic their life is for choosing to stab and murder each other for status. Like... guys, you're assholes! You're what's wrong with society, literally. I don't really care. I don't want to give you attention.

    ...

If it's a really good show, though...

I really like this show. I am so tired of action movies and shows but Peaky Blinders have the necessary amount of action/violence to not make you bored of it and to understand the characters/history.

I loved the first season, but lost interest partway through the second. For me it always felt like a short-run show. Just my two cents, I'm sure it isn't garbage or anything!

I’m halfway through season 3 and it seems to be just getting better but I would agree with you at some point in season 2 I did think part of a storyline was dragging on but it soon got really good...

Season two wasn't their best till the very last episode of the season. Then it just kept getting stronger and stronger.

I have it on my watch list for perhaps an odd reason: it came recommended in a tabletop RPG I've been playing! I'm running Blades in the Dark, and one of the "touchstones" (recommended media as inspiration for the game) includes Peaky Blinders. The game is about playing a band of criminals in a grimy city.

I avoided it for perhaps a silly reason: the name. It just had no idea what "peaky blinders" could possibly mean. :p

It's the name of a real Birmingham street gang that existed from the 1890s to 1920s.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peaky_Blinders

And this section explains the apocryphal and presumptive historical meaning behind the name.

      Etymology

The name Peaky Blinder is said to be derived from the gang members' practice of stitching disposable razor blades into the peaks of their flat caps which could then be used as weapons. However, as the Gillette company only introduced the first replaceable safety razor system in 1903, in America, and it was not until 1908 that the first factory manufacturing them in Great Britain opened, this version of the name is considered apocryphal. British author John Douglas, from Birmingham, claimed hats were used as a weapon in his novel A Walk Down Summer Lane – members with razor blades sewn into their caps would headbutt enemies to potentially blind them. However, according to English professor Carl Chinn, Chair of Community History at the University of Birmingham, this theory is a myth and there is no evidence to support it.

Birmingham historian Carl Chinn believes the name is actually a reference to the gang's sartorial elegance. He says the popular usage of "peaky" at the time referred to any flat cap with a peak. "Blinder" was a familiar Birmingham slang term (still used today) to describe something or someone of dapper appearance. A further explanation might be from the gang's own criminal behaviour: they were known to sneak up from behind, then pull the hat peak down over a victim's face so they could not describe who robbed them.

p.s. Strange name aside, you really should give it a watch IMO. It's one of my favorite shows, despite the fact that I am not usually a fan of gangster shows.

I did end up looking it up, both the name and the show. :p I watched an episode and really enjoyed it. The only thing keeping my from watching it is the rest of my to-watch list.

I keep being recommended this show. I watched the first few episodes some time ago, but I think I'll dive back in.
