And yes, I've found it easier to move on and adapt to Tildes. I think a lot of us want some sort of justice against Reddit....but to what end and what does that actually accomplish? Someone else "losing" or "winning" doesn't often define what I consider to be wins and losses in my own life.

I often wonder if a lot of time and money could be saved if the parents talked and listened to their child with the intent to understand.

Late to the party, but I've been playing a lot of Rimworld lately. I have pretty good self control when it comes to moderating my video game time...but this game is testing me on that front!

Also from So Cal (about 35 miles east of Los Angeles). Also just reading about it for the first time. My hunch is that most folks in my area assume it will not be a big deal or won't hit us as we are more inland.

Aside from the potential rains and flooding, it's the winds that I fear the most for the greater LA area.

I like it a lot, but it is an odd duck as a social deduction game. As such, I think a lot of people will find that it breathes life into the genre, whereas others might be annoyed at some of its mechanisms.

I am happy to elaborate, but in short, there are certain mechanisms that can feel very cruel and punishing. And it can lead to a sense of futility, and yet, your team is never fully out of the game. These moments are often hilarious and make for good storytelling. And if you go into the game knowing that the game mechanisms inherently generate a lot of nail-biting endings, you are far more likely to enjoy it. This type of fatalism makes landslide victories very rare...but it can be frustrating feeling like you have played 99% of the game correctly only to end up on on the losing team. It's a great blend of logic and chaos. And if the chaos is too much for your group, this is where I'd recommend Deception: Murder in Hong Kong. But if you like a good dose of balanced chaos, then this is a brilliant design.

I hope you enjoy it. Fantastic as a solo game, even better at 2 players. I rarely play it at 3, but it's still very good at that player count. I would only play with very experienced players at 4....

    Marriage and Family Therapist.

Obviously it is more complicated than this, but I occasionally chuckle at the fact that people would pay me to tell me their secrets.

But the satisfaction is there in spades when you can help someone accomplish their goals. And when you see people overcome depression, repair a marriage, etc., it feels quite satisfying to know you got to journey with someone through that season.

Sounds like you've done a lot of prep work already, which will go a long way! Nice work.

    A few tips:

    1. If you and your players don't know a rule, make the decision on the spot and look it up later. Game flow is important. Frequent stops to get the rules right often kills momentum. It's all made up anyway, so unless your PCs are adamant that everything is to be played exactly by the book, make a snap decision and keep playing! You can always make a note and read the rules after session to see what the "proper" ruling should have been. And that's a more organic way to learn the nuanced rules.

    2. Avoid the DM vs. players phenomenon. And remind the players that they are not playing against you. Rather, they are interacting with the world, NPCs, and each other. I've played many social deduction and euro games with my DnD group. They are used to competing against me. We had to unlearn that when I started DMing. Remember, you are a god in that world. You have all the power. They can't beat you.

    3. Consider the rule of fun. PCs like to do cool stuff. Set them up to do cool stuff. Constantly stifling or hindering them sucks.

    4. But! Adversity, scarcity, and near death experiences add to the adventure and fosters memorable moments. Balance is key! In one campaign, a few of the players lost all of their items in a shipwreck. It sucked for them for sure....so I had to introduce plot hooks that allowed them to build back up in cool ways. It's a tough balance, but necessary to good story telling.

    5. You are there to have fun too. You are part of the experience. Yes, you will work harder than your PCs, but you are not their servant nor are you a customer service rep. If you are not having fun, then that needs to be a discussion with the group.
