Caelic I'd be happy if it were permanent, really. Otherwise if there is user history to consider, you have to do a research project to find it.I'd be happy if it were permanent, really. Otherwise if there is user history to consider, you have to do a research project to find it.

Comment on How do we ensure the site stays un-fluffy? in ~tildes
Caelic I doubt it's possible to prevent the fluff from being a major component. Humor is popular; popular items will always rise to the top. As others have suggested, the tagging system will work well....I doubt it's possible to prevent the fluff from being a major component. Humor is popular; popular items will always rise to the top. I'd like to see something like Slashdot to combine the voting and tagging - indicate why you are voting, not just a vote itself. That way you can put "Funny" on the short list of options to classify the posts, which allows others to filter them neatly.

I'd put the open sourcing as a higher priority so that extra people can be recruited to work on things like the search!

It's the same trick companies do when rebranding.. "I hated 'old company name' but 'new company name' is great!" - we changed nothing.
One of the biggest reasons you'd want to reset is to avoid persecution for bad behavior.. the other reason is choosing a terrible name. I'd say a nice middle is reset names but lose your system chosen trust, since you're also getting a clean slate on your human memory trust.
I do agree it isn't that big a deal, provided we can tell for sure.

I agree it's not that big a deal, so long as we can check the history to see the posts.. and those posts have some reference to the new name.. and ideally the old name shows forever in the post history, as well.
After all, the main reason to name change is to avoid well deserved persecution in my humble experience

Caelic Strongly agree. Adding the ability to add features faster because of additional talent should be a higher priority than individual feature fixes.Strongly agree. Adding the ability to add features faster because of additional talent should be a higher priority than individual feature fixes.

What benefit is there to the user of a name change other than keeping the karma they accumulated under their own name?
Them keeping the karma under a new name only harms the community, as community members will associate them with being a respectable user they just didn't know about, instead of a known quantity.
Other benefits such as easily copying over which subs you were subscribed to could be maintained without the name change.. "Copy settings" option or some such.

I've always turned off the CSS myself, but it definitely helps give communities their own feel.
How about "It's almost as if" to give whatever you say next that passive aggressive sarcasm that will turn off anyone who reads it
