I was the first person to clock Sonic with the emeralds at my school. This was obviously pre-mainstream internet, pre-smartphone days so I had no proof to bring to school and nobody believed me.

    • Keepass - because remembering passwords sucks
    • Steam - who doesn't love playing games and they have made decent Linux efforts too
    • Evernote - changed the way I did everything at uni, though I use the clunkier (but free) Joplin now. Holding out hope one day for a more worthy alternative.

Good luck leaving, people in western societies everywhere are constantly voting in conservatives and have for years. It's a sad state of affairs that I hope one day changes.

Ubuntu (and especially lately Kubuntu). Not because I don't know my way around Linux but rather I prefer that some of the details are taken care of for me. Like programing and code reuse, there is no need to reinvent the wheel to get e.g. display drivers working when it can be largely automated these days.

At some point I realized that constantly babysitting an OS just wasn't worth it for me. The beauty of a distro like Ubuntu is that you can still fairly easily pop the hood if you want to as well.

I guess if you are a poor student then this is great. Otherwise, screw all of this for free coffee.

Having kids myself I fortunately own both of the major current ones, so it works out for these console exclusives that I might want to play from time to time.

Yeah I hear you. Although I'll probably get it on console anyway I'd love to see this designed for PC and to take advantage of all the performance improvements that offers.

What I like about FOSS in general is that it makes the user operating system environment exciting again from a competition point of view.

The recent controversy around the Linux kernel project and Linus personally is interesting however. Although I'm glad Linus is learning to take a chill pill I'm not sure that everything alongside it is necessarily great for the community itself. My main concern by it as a user is that the code of conduct changes are going to be used as a weapon against other people in that community to push them out and that may impact the improvements I get to otherwise benefit from as a user. For a long time the benefit from Linus's heavy handed approach and the simple "be excellent to each other" rules are that the absolute best quality and highest standards have been reasonably maintained throughout.

There was certainly room for improvement with the way people communicated with each other, but I guess time will tell the outcomes of these changes and what that means for Linux.
