To get the free coffee, university students must give away their names, phone numbers, email addresses and majors, or in Brown's lingo, concentrations. Students also provide dates of birth and professional interests, entering all of the information in an online form. By doing so, the students also open themselves up to receiving information from corporate sponsors who pay the cafe to reach its clientele through logos, apps, digital advertisements on screens in stores and on mobile devices, signs, surveys and even baristas.

This is so crazy to me that people don’t see how valuable their information is to advertisers. I guess it starts slow with things like Facebook and builds to free coffee. It’s only a matter of time until there’s wearable technology to customized ads as you go about your day.

If you could sell this shit to someone on the blackmarket for $10k, that would change people's tunes. The fact is it isn't worth much in a day and age like today. Which is helpful for the data companies, to say the least.

You don’t need to sell it on the black market, corporations are selling their data left and right for a lot more than $10k.

Uh, where are you getting those numbers? That's absolutely not true that the average person's data is worth that much.

I think I was misunderstanding you. I was meaning more mass data, not a single person’s data.

Word, no worries. I was definitely meaning mass data. I was trying to say that people don't think their data is worth anything because it's worth very little on its own.

Interesting this was your first though as well. To me, this cafe seems like the first step in people appreciating the fact that their data has exchange value, that companies want it.

I guess that’s part of the disconnect for me then. I want to make it as hard as possible for any company to get my info. I don’t use social media (except tildes and a handful of sports subs), I don’t allow my phone to track location and I often leave it at home or work when I go out. I use cash as much as possible and never sign up for loyalty/point systems. I want as little as my info out there as possible and my goal is to eventually live off the grid completely.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to be completely off the grid?

Not OP but I don't like sharing my data too. It's just because of privacy, I feel much better knowing I can have secrets and a private life without someone or a company knowing about it.

Also not OP, I may not mind it if it weren't for the obvious downsides: data leaks, one malicious employee, one vulnerability or one lost backup is all it takes for your private information to be out there for everyone to see, including your friends, family and employer. And that may include embarrassing stuff, and things that can be used against you. You may get made fun of, lose your job, or who knows what worse may happen.

What I described is not some kind of hypothetical situation, it has already happened many times and will certainly happen again.

The government and the oligarchs know too much about us. They have buildings full of personal information and private conversations. Our government is ran by former or future lobbyists who make each other richer while taking advantage of the common person. Banks are in cahoots with drug dealers and criminals, and utilities such as electricity are commoditized to keep monopolies that are backed by the government.

I want to live a simpler life. I want to be self sufficient and giving back to this world, not continuing to drain it. I don't need to know what some asshole did, which celebrities are screwing, or how politicians are trying to one up each other. I would rather be working with my hands outside than sitting at a desk. My current job allows me to provide for my kids to get a good education near their friends and family, but once they are graduated and on their own I plan on quitting my job and moving to the middle of nowhere.

Well that's super creepy. They say they've never had anyone refuse to give up their data, but wouldn't anyone that objected just never enter the place in the first place?

I used to go to a gym and refused to use my fingerprint. I got a lot of weird looks.

I guess if you are a poor student then this is great. Otherwise, screw all of this for free coffee.
