With all the talk of layoffs and studio closures, I wanted to know what the opinions and general experience is like as an indie game dev. How viable is it, how successful can you really be with that career and what challenges can crop up?
I started making my own game a while back and got extremely discouraged by the layoffs and technical hurdles I was running into, to the point where someone told me maybe I wasn't cut out for it on discord. This really killed my drive, and it would be awesome to hear about some success stories or even some struggles that you may have overcome.

After listening it's pretty clear no anti cheat is effective and it's more the method you apply the bans and anti cheat that count. Not even kernel level anti cheat methods work.

I've tried numerous password managers from Google to keepass, I'm sticking with proton pass for the foreseeable future.

I have no sympathy for this company, they purchased everything under the sun and wasted so much money, not to mention all the games they've cancelled recently. It's really no wonder they've had to do something like this to stay relevant.

It has everything lined up to be one of their best games, but they dropped the ball with the combat, to which they improved for greedfall and built an entire game around combat in steel rising (I'm guessing this was intentional in order to improve their combat mechanics). To this day, Mars war logs is the closest to a Bioware style RPG I've played without being a Bioware RPG. One more thing to add to the technomancer, the waypoint and map system was just bad, like almost irredeemably bad. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to understand the quest journal and how the waypoints worked...

My main theory on this whole situation is that Microsoft really threw a wrench in the entire gaming market with gamepass.
Sony was banking on live service to make up the difference but that's just not happening due mostly to how long it's taking them to make a live service game, now they've realized it's time to cut their losses and just make a few live service games instead of all of their games being live service, and now we have a large gap of no first party games. I truly believe Jim Ryan was correct when he said publishers hate gamepass, and Microsoft knows this, so they're just buying up the publishers to fill out gamepass.

Had to be taken off his treatments because of it and it essentially killed him.
This always made me mad, like he would still be around if it weren't for that, but my wife is amazing and told me I've been really grumpy for the past few months, and it was because I'm angry at that whole situation. I was taking it out on everyone else when it wasn't anyone else's fault.
In 2024 I've decided that the anger just isn't worth holding onto, and I've since been really happy the last couple of weeks. Ive started looking into game development on Godot and I'm really trying to find a meaningful use of my time in a field I truly love, video games. Hopefully this continues and I can make something of it someday.

It's an absolutely stupid reason to have windows installed, but until nvidia adds support for those features to a web browser, I can't switch over 100%.

I started with Mistborn, liver the original trilogy so much that I really wanted to read stormlight because it's really his main cosmere project and I've heard nothing but good things about the series. I really haven't read a book series like this since college over a decade ago with the legend of drizzt series, but the characters of vin and Elend, with sazed thrown in was an excellent mesh of character building. The original Mistborn trilogy really drew me in and I just want to dive into the main chunk of the cosmere universe with Stormlight.

Obviously not dropping my job to do this, but how do you even get started in this area if you have absolutely no experience? It's been my dream to just make games even if they're indie games, and I have no idea where to start.
https://mastodon.social/@Defaced5960/111925460980966778 this is the game I was working on. I'm very proud of what I made, but I ran into issues with scene loading and people tried to tell me I had to learn how to do asset instancing when I didn't know what that was after I already got it working in another project, that's when I was told I might not be cut out for it.
