I have to plug my favourite album of the week:

    Sentiment by Claire Rousay

She describes her music as "emo ambient", but this one is a bit more "ambient emo". But it's not really that at all. Any ambient, shoegaze, field recording or emo fans - or fans of difficult to categorize music - here, I strongly recommend giving it a listen.

Police in the UK can only hold people for 24 hours (usually, there are some exceptions). By the end of 24 hours you must either charge or release. Under certain conditions you can be released on 'Pre-Charge Bail' where they can set limitations on what you can do, for example you can be banned from leaving the country, or from contacting a victim or witness etc. During this time police will continue to investigate the crime and can re-arrest for further questioning at a later date. This is totally distinct from the form of paid bail after charge in the US.

I recently invested in a Fuji X100F (a generation younger than the X100V in the article). Seems to be a great little camera so far. I mostly shoot film but wanted a pocketable camera to take on holidays for situations when film is impractical (low light when I've got low sensitivity film in, rain so I don't destroy my Leica M6) or when I want more attempts at a shot than would be reasonable with 36 exposure rolls.

Can definitely recommend it to folks who are looking for a compact, pocketable camera that takes much better shots than your phone manages. There's a ton of customisation, to the point where it gets pretty complex, for people who want that; but it's equally good just out of the box to point and shoot. The X100V has been super hard to get for the last year, so I went for the F. I'm sure the V is better in some ways, but to save some money looking a model or two back would still be a good option for most people.

Do serious grid scale solutions to renewables exist right now? If we have billions to dump into radical de-carbonisation, could we start building today? From what I've read I believe we don't actually have viable solutions in this space, yet, but I may be totally wrong(!). I'm absolutely for renewables, we should be aiming at 100% renewables in the shortest timeline possible. But can we have the dream of diverse and extensive renewable sources and baseload provided by batteries filled by these sources, before we can build a ton of reactors, if we started building them as soon as possible?

(We absolutely need to do either at the earliest possible opportunity. This should be treated as the emergency it is and work on the scale and urgency on the level of WW2 Total War. This needs to be started about 20 years ago (or tomorrow))

I really don't know how to thank you enough for sharing that link. I've just lost many hours to the 'surprise me...' button. I'm relatively young, and I've never had this big a wave of nostalgia. Most of these sites are exactly what I remember the web was like when I first started to explore it. It's like opening a time capsule.

I've been so depressed recently thinking of everything we've lost on the Web through the centralisation, enshitifcation and hyper commercialisation of the vast, vast majority of it. So much creativity, so much information and so much hope has been lost. This is the perfect antidote. I'm honestly emotional seeing this stuff, I thought nearly every vestige of this period had been lost.

    Personal favourites:

    • This guy's personal page about all of the kites he's got. The excitement that you could write about your niche hobby with enthusiasts all over the world.
    • This family's trip page to Scotland & Ireland in 1998, complete with 280x210 JPEGs.
    • The Elvis Information network, with the most amazing oldschool web design, but incredibly still being kept up to date.
    • This group that love STUNTS / 4D SPORTS DRIVING.
    • and the phrase "We are [...], a group of friends who decided to create a site on the Net for the people whose interests are similar to ours." here. How perfectly that encapsulates attitudes to the early Web.

If anyone has more ways to find what's left of this era, please let me know.

Daniel Ricciardo will make a shock in-season Formula 1 comeback with AlphaTauri from next week's Hungarian Grand Prix, replacing the ousted Nyck de Vries.

    • Do you think Nyck got a fair chance at Alpha Tauri? He's underperformed, but only had 10 races
    • Will Daniel be able to get results in that car? Has he gotten over the problems that led to his McLaren exit?
    • What can this mean about the Red Bull / Alpha Tauri lineups for next season?

I also am a member of Tortoise, which specialises in 'slow news'.

I came across Tortoise while re-evaluating where I get my news and media, and being more thoughtful about where I spend my time online, in the wake of the Reddit 3rd party app shutdown. Slow and thoughtful news feels like the exact opposite of doom scrolling through clickbait articles and constant bad-faith arguments in the comments (on Reddit and on most news sites). I'm enjoying it so far, there's a lot of deeper audio/podcast reporting in the archive that I need to start working through.

And I just like supporting independent media. There's not nearly enough good journalism in the UK. There's a print journal called 'Delayed Gratification' that has a similar slow news ethos that I've seen, might be worth checking out if you like Tortoise.

I mostly shoot film these days. My job and my hobbies are all technical and computer based, so the constant editing of fairly bland DSLR shots was too much & I started shooting analogue with my grandparents' old cameras. Eventually got into medium format with a cheap Yashicamat TLR that I found for cheap in a camera store (the square format is weird, but it works well for Instagram). I recently picked up my holy grail camera, a Leica M6, that I'm in love with at the moment; the simplicity of it being just mechanics and light is wonderful when everything else in my life is so tech heavy.

So far I've just had my film processed at the lab but there's a photography centre in my city that has open bookable darkrooms and I'm about to take a colour darkroom course there.

I've got some of my stuff up on my Instagram if anyone's interested.
