I know IRC isn't indexed, that's why IRC was a chat service much like Discord. The product support, the project discussion etc went in forums.

Discord combines the two, it even tries to be a Wiki which... is great if you're on the server/have an invite/otherwise blessed with the knowledge of it even existing but you'll never find it via a search engine.

It is being used by all manner of things as a replacement for vBulletin/phpbb and I know forums are seen as old internet and dead but we do have this issue where a lot of communities are as good as hidden as a result.

You log out and your settings are lost. The app saves nothing. I don't stay logged in to chat services, it just isn't how I have ever done it, I dip in and out of stuff like that.

Good lord I hate Discord and its rise.

I'm probably too old for it to really appreciate it but it feels like so much of the internet that should just be a forum or an IRC channel like the old days is now a Discord server and it comes with so many annoyances. The app doesn't even save settings if you log out!

I know it's cheap and (relatively) easy for small projects to set up as their primary support/comms platform but... I just cannot get along with it and I also see so much important information being conveyed there that will never be indexed by search engines. Those days of finding a solution to your problem on a somehow still online early 2000s forum are gone in the Discord age.

One of the more interesting darknet market services that was once sold (probably still is, I really could not say) was by Amazon refund fraud specialists.

Now of course who knows but the nature of these marketplaces quickly rooted out people who weren't actually selling what they said they were. I remember reading about their ability to obtain buy one-get two on even very expensive products from Amazon by simply following the script as far as claiming the item was not received, the fraudster basically only needed a few details about the order to obtain the desired result.

Certainly anyone who has ever returned anything to Amazon will know the process seems absurdly easy in comparison to many retailers, it's a great thing and I think the Amazon way of doing things has caused many others to follow along but... it very obviously leads to a whole lot of fraud.

I hadn't even bothered to check before but I'm apparently connected to my router at 866.7mbps, I'm not even sure what WiFi standard this is but I'd guess maybe WiFi 5?

It's just unimportant to me, my wireless devices are connected to a wireless network for the internet and my internet is 100mbps. If that can be delivered consistently - and it can, my house has two access points that give high signal strength anywhere - then I don't really care about upgrading it.

I can only assume in the future my devices will naturally support the newer standards that will enable the inevitability of gigabit+ internet to every device. Like most home users I'm not doing much transferring of files between computers or anything like that, at most I will stream a video file from a device to my TV on occasion and right now that works just fine of course.

While this will work, please don't do this. Purging all caches means every single list requires an update and this is unnecessary.

You only need to update the Quick Fixes list.

While it's not a lot of data per person I keep seeing this recommendation to purge the cache and update all lists which the people at ublock origin have specifically requested you not to do. Only update the list that is relevant, in this case it is the Quick Fixes list. Given the number of users all of this purging/updating does consume a lot of data and these lists are hosted free of charge, it's important to minimise unnecessary updates.

    1. Force an update of ONLY the uBlock filters – Quick fixes list. <== This is within the extension. Lists are what determine what's blocked or not. And this list is where we counter YouTube.

Yeah Android Firefox is annoying. My main gripe is with the URL/search bar, it seems impossible to tame.

I simply want my history to be the first results and only after that should it search for anything using a search engine. Seems impossible to configure it to do this though so I'm constantly having to specify history/tabs/search using the little selector.

Might just be how I use a browser though... history is everything for me, I navigate to specific places by typing a portion of URL's that I visit most days.

One of the national newspapers in my country served up Chrome for Android hijacking ads for years. The ad would open pop-ups that could not be easily closed and would vibrate the phone.

I don't know how it did this exactly but it happened repeatedly to me over a couple of years. Each time it happened to me I informed them that some bad actor was delivering browser hijacking ads on whatever ad network they were using. Never got any reply.

One day it happened and I said f-it, that was the day I rooted the phone and was able to use /etc/hosts level blocking of advertising networks at last. That solved the problem.

Of course you can just use Firefox etc with uBlock origin these days so such measures are not required but advertisers pissed off technically adept-enough users enough that many decided to just universally block ads a long time ago now, I seem to remember reaching this point some time before 2010 on my desktop PC.

    Thank you.

They are still niche. My family are always inquiring about them and I have attempted to show them just how easy it is to block ads online, they still haven't bothered doing it.

One even thought that blocking ads might be illegal!
The vast, overwhelming majority of internet users see many ads every single day and do not use adblockers. This has become particularly true as mobile devices became the dominant platform to access the web on since adblocking on those is a level of difficulty beyond doing it on the desktop PC.

I have always been aware of the fact advertisers have greater reach than ever before thanks to the rise of Android and IOS with the bulk of those users running no adblocking.

YouTube will be no different, they've even branched out and seen huge growth in the TV market where adblocking can only be achieved using tools like a Pihole, far beyond the technical ability/willingness of most of their users.

Advertisers are making plenty of money, there is no crisis.

Oh yeah and as monitors got a little cheaper towards the late 90s they just got bigger and heavier. Lugging a 19" monitor to LAN parties became normal, some people (particularly those heavily involved in the 'backup' scene) also lugged full tower cases with them, often stuffed full of hard drives and the usual compliment of optical drives and burners :)

I remember lugging machines like this all over the country, some people even brought dedicated server machines with them...

A lot of those UK games of the late 80s to mid-90s heyday era kinda merge together in my memory, Amiga games from UK studios in particular had such a distinctive style that seemed to be shared by many but then that was maybe just more to do with the hardware.
