Is Tumblr full of personally identifying information? I always thought of it as a largely anonymous platform.
using said data to create a facsimile of the user base to automate said user base content in the future especially when that sort of technology was ne er a worry from the start of the content development.
Who is looking to automate Tumblr posts? What does a Tumblr AI do to change your ability to express yourself or connect with your friends?

Correct, which is why this hostility seems misplaced. Is a key part of the site's whole ethos not the idea that one should read more than one writes? Isn't that why the comment box is at the bottom of every page?
You aren't involved in LGBT discussions, so why do you think it is okay for you to decide any bit of how that discussion takes place?
I was responding to a suggestion to create a supermoderator to police a topic for acceptable comments, hide them, and tell the person what they should have said.
That would be a fundamental change to how this site operates.
I would have jumped in with the same comment regardless of the topic for which it had been suggested.
Why was here, now, when people say "I don't think outsiders should get to tone police our queer discussions" the moment that struck your chord to come and demand your right to an open discussion about LGBT topics?
I haven't demanded anything whatsoever.

Both of those things are important to have at times, but that doesn't mean we should be shifting all spaces to be one or the other. Tildes currently splits the difference quite well, and while there's always room for improvement that doesn't mean we should abandon the attempt.

ibuprofen That is an idea I would strongly oppose. I come to Tildes for discussion and debate, not to read pre-approved positions on a given topic.I would like tildes a lot more if we had, I dunno, an LGBT topic czar that monitored for those kinds of comments and hid them but told the user politely why it's wrong.

Reilly's stick doesn't even hit the head, it rides up the shoulder into the neck. Given that video, I think the burden of proof needs to be on showing that it was intentional. If Reilly intended to cross check him in the head one would expect him to have done a much better job — it's not like there was anything preventing him from coming in 6" higher.
Friedman had a similar perspective that it was a ride up. He was shocked that it was an in-person hearing in the first place and thought the suspension would come in around 2-3 games. And that's someone who's not only impartial, but also more plugged in than anyone else.
I also don't think my fandom is playing much of a role here. I'm not upset about it — this team badly needed a kick in the ass, and it seems to have worked. I'm quite content about everything that's transpired, I just don't think the league did a very good job addressing those two crucial points mentioned above. In a video designed to explain and justify a suspension the league should be more exact, not leave the impression that they're ducking explaining themselves thoroughly.

Comment on Toronto Maple Leafs' Morgan Rielly to appeal five-game suspension to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in ~sports.hockey
ibuprofen I think it's pretty obvious that Rielly wasn't targeting the head. He had plenty of time to line it up properly if that were the case, instead of having it glance up off the shoulder. So I...I don't buy the "it was an accident, he was aiming for the body" excuse from Rielly, and I'm pleased to see Bettman gave it zero credence as well:
I think it's pretty obvious that Rielly wasn't targeting the head. He had plenty of time to line it up properly if that were the case, instead of having it glance up off the shoulder.
So I disagree with the video on two points:
-
The video at 0:45 says Rielly intentionally strikes Greig in the head. I don't see how that can be a rational conclusion. The point of contact wasn't the head. He intentionally struck him, yes. He ended up hitting the head, yes. But those two facts don't get you to his intent being to strike the head.
-
At 1:05 the video talks about this not being a case of jousting where both players could expect escalating contact. Obviously they weren't "jousting" but the NHL explanation uses that qualifier to slip past separately addressing the fact that it was absolutely a situation in which Greig could expect escalating contact.
As a Leafs fan there are so many angles to this situation that it's hard to express them.
-
I have zero issue with Greig.
-
Greig should have known someone was coming after him after pulling that.
-
Good on Reilly for lighting a spark under his team. The Jordan documentary taught us all about athletes using things to get fired up about to spur them on, and Reilly made the right call.
-
Reilly shouldn't have used his stick. And if he was going to use his stick he needed to be more responsible about where it went.
-
I don't think the suspension was well supported by the video explanation. It seemed weak on the two points mentioned above. It felt like they were trying to pull a bit of a fast one with their explanations.
-
I don't think Bettman does a very good job of reviewing suspensions and holding the DOPS accountable for justifying their work. It seems like it's generally just a formality, and I bet an independent arbitrator would reverse suspensions more than he does. I think the PA and players feel pretty strongly that the appeals process is a joke.

The first regular season matchup is suddenly must-see TV. This is good for the game.

It's not just housing, pretty much all of our service infrastructure isn't built up to a level that can support this. Healthcare is particularly bad, since we were already insufficiently prepared for aging boomers and then covid accelerated healthcare retirements and other stresses.
Canada has an immigration system that's obviously flawed but generally still pretty alright. The problem is there's a parallel stream of irregular immigration that's being abused, and our government has done an atrocious job of containing this, closing loopholes, and ensuring our immigration is orderly and at a manageable level. Our current government (a) sees immigrant growth on their watch as likely to grow their political base, (b) has a progressive wing that likes the idea of Canada taking in people who want to be here regardless of whether it's in our country's interest, and (c) has a business wing that really likes the idea of lots of entry level labour desperate to work and keep wages down.
On the face of it, something like international students should be a no brainer. Smart, educated, young people who build ties here early are pretty close to dream immigrants. Historically that's been true, but that only works if you're actually bringing in students. If you don't vet the institutions and programs you end up with a massive loophole of "students" who are signed up at diploma mills which barely exist, aren't educated, and are working under the table while trying to get permanent residency. It's a mess.
