There's a way to enable that though. Go to your settings and it's the fourth option :)

When I first read your comment I thought "well in order to build a sense of community, of course you need to rally around one center ideology or bias" But then the more I thought about it, the more I realized that sinking a site too drastically into one specific bias is exactly how the modern social media echo chamber evolved. So yes, I fully support brining in people from all around the world to get in different perspectives (so long as they contribute high quality discussion like you said)

I dunno why I commented, something just clicked after thinking a bit about your comment, which now that I think about it shows the success of Tildes core ideas already ☺

I agree. I'm in love with the anti-bloat philosophy that has been bubbling up on the web for the past few years, and Tildes is a perfect example of how well it works. No frills, no Javascript laden advertising, no privacy invading trackers. Just pure, unadulterated, high quality discussion and content.

Basically I wrote a custom program (inspired by this) that when given a video and subtitle track can do something called forced alignment that roughly puts timestamps to words. It's not perfect however, and I do indeed have to go through every word and make sure it's the actual word being said.

As for the why? ... I have no idea :) I like to think it's along the lines of high effort, low quality shitposting along the lines of this guy playing this jazz lick for 5 hours (and his explanation in this Q&A)

Yes! One of the core parts of tildes from the docs was that it was going to avoid website bloat. Too much customization may lead to it just completely wreaking that tenant.

Yeah, I agree 100%. Another point to consider: I remember very specifically on one thread where three automated bots responded to a guys post with the same information. Each of the bots on their own were posting something helpful, and when the coder was designing it was probably thinking along the lines of helping the community, however it just created unnecessary spam.

However I don't think we should discount the idea of some humorous bots too. In the right context, bots like HaikuBot and the like can be quite funny. But then we get into the muddy waters of how to regulate it and the like... Maybe restricting bots to certain ~'s? Funny ones for the funny ~'s, and serious ones for the serious ~'s? Slippery slop indeed...

This is a very good question, hopefully someone much smarter than I will propose a solution :)
